What's the most humane way to euthanize a fish?

Wow, this has gotten pretty rough.

Personally, I'd give it away or take it to the LFS. Either way it could heal up just fine and have a happy life somewhere else.

I would try to give it away, but if you can't & its in very bad shape you can put it under your car tire & run it over real fast. maybe it wont feel nothing since it will be fraction of a second.

What to do

What to do

You return it to petco and they could put it with the rest of there sickly fish and sell it to some unlucky customer, still probably better than most of there fish.

Running garbage disposal, same as the hammer but less mess and you don't see it, faster death than the toilet.

the best way is to continue nature. feed it to some other creature or fish so it doesnt go to waste.

That's a good way to reintroduce disease into your tank, depending on what made the fish ill to begin with.

You cant be too squeamish... , think of it as a pet dog or cat. You wouldnt put them in the freezer to suffer till dead would you?

Cmon, hammer is a bit too squashing,(although effective in a good way).

Throw it in a bag (w/ a bit of water), and smack it off the side of a step, curb, etc. Quick, easy, humane.

***And those of you who suggested craislist or the LFS are the ones who spread disease and probabaly get most of these people in this situation in the first place! Take care of your fish, have a HT and a QT to let it get better, and if not, euthanize it! The "pass it off" solution is as useful as curing AIDS by sharing needles in a clinic.

just fill a bucket up with water and lots of ice cubes when the water is cold enough drop it in. only takes a few seconds and its dead

If you go to a report by the American Veterinary Medical Association on euthanasia, it covers humane euthansia in fish. On page 20, freezing is not acceptable unless anesthetized. Acceptible methods include MS-222 overdose and instantaneous crushing of the head. Clove oil will work, but has not undergone FDA approval yet. Shotgun works too per the article, but that may be a bit much for a damsel........PULL click, click BANGGGG

MS-222 is not available to hobbyists, use clove oil and vodka. It works like MS-222 and takes very little time to kill the fish.

You can readily buy MS-222 from Aquatic Ecosytems or Argent, even in small hobby sized amounts without the need to be a business or university ;)

Agreed on the triple 2, and to take it a step further, use sodium bicarb to offset the chemically induced pH swing in order to ensure a less stressful passing.
