What's the most humane way to euthanize a fish?

+1 on the clove oil. I know a local Vet who specializes in fish and is nationally recognized in the "Koi world" who recommends the use of clove oil for sedation and euthanasia.

call the neighborhood kids around and stick a firecracker in it's mouth, tell the kids to stay in school... then light it......

I use the in the bag one hard swing at a hard surface method .. its quick easy and dosent require ordering anything..

the clove oil method is easy and affective. place the fish in a container of salt water big enough to submerge him and then add clove oil at about a cap every 3-4 minutes. it works fast and when you see him slow his breathing or lay down then he is alseep. you can add any pure grain alcohol at that time to finish him off quickly and harmlessly.

i have also heard of people using alkaseltzer in the cup. it is supposed to be very quick .just make sure to keep the bubbling end away from the gills. im not sure if it scares them or burns the gills form the off gassing, but i have read they stress alittle using this method

If you can manage to get the nerve a pizza cutter will do the trick pretty fast and not so painful i would assume.

Clove oil + Vodka then freeze it (btw, it usually won't freeze solid), but fish are cold blooded so freezing is quicker for them than for a warm blooded animal.

A Pelican!

It's beak can hold more than it's Belly can!

They used to get all the small, deep water reef fish i would catch off California. The reef fish get the bends and a bloated swim bladder when you reel em up fast from 200-300 feet deep cold water reefs. You cant keep the under sized ones. so you let them go. but the fish can't swim down with an inflated, decompressed swim bladder and bulging eyes, so they float like a cork. the pelicans patiently float just off the stern of your boat and scoop up all the floaters. And squawk: THANK YOU!!

a sollution was to have a large needle handy on a dowel, and stick the fish bladder to deflate it. still ,im not sure they survived the bends. they rarely leave the bottom.

One gulp and they are gone.
the way nature intended.
Just another link in the food chain.

For reals?

reading all of this has made my day. most just want to kill it, but congrats to the few who chose healing:uzi: :fish2: :lmao:

I would bury it under a rainbow and hopefully a beautiful tree made of gold would grow of it's remains.

C'mon really guys. I didn't read past the first page but, the LFS doesn't want a cheap lumpy fish that is half digested by parasites. Hit it with a hammer and be done with it.

once fed a dying fish to a carpet anemone by just nudging him in there. It was super cool to watch. But he was like a 200 fish... The thing that really sucked was 2 days later the anemone pooped out the bones then died a day later.

I like the "feeding it to an anemone or other fish" idea... It's the natural way of things. Why waste it? Fish eat other fish, that's how it goes. So I'd make use of it to give nutrition to your healthy fish, rather than sticking it in your freezer or flushing it down your toilet or doing some ridiculous thing with it in your woodshop. Just my 2 cents.

Or hey, just fillet it and put it over a rice patty and eat it with a nice wasabi/soy sauce mix and save yourself a few bucks whenever you're in the sushi mood:)
