Paul... that is no joking matter... I thought it all a joke myself... until I got nearly killed by a giant blue linkia... revenge for us owning harlequin shrimp I believe...:D (me in the Marianas Islands, Micronesia)

Just from dip netting / cast net down along the Texas gulf coast I've caught juvenile pompano, pipefish, sargassum anglers, at least 5 different types of gobies (many of these from salt marsh areas in from shore) , blennies , sergeant majors , diamond killifish etc. When the sargassum moves into the gulf in early summer / late spring you can get tons of neat stuff scooping it up and picking through. Also off the rock jetties with a minnow trap and some bait you can catch peppermint shrimp by the dozens up until autumn.

A gill net is not the best for the fish, especially smaller fish. You need to find small eyed (1/2") monofilament netting. I have several, one 65 footer, one 35', one 6' (all are 6' high). They are indeed barrier nets and the fish should never get stuck in them. If they are gilled or stuck they will be suseptible to injury and later infections. I made my smaller one and I had a 100' made for me (I later cut it into the 65' and 35'). I think they would be extremely hard to find made on the mainland US. I know our netting source is from Japan. If you are really interested I can try hunt them down again and we can do a group order type thing.

Once you use them you will see that different net sizes have diff. applications, ie depths, species, quantity, etc.

i am going collecting today and i hope i catch something. Is anyone else going collecting this weekend or went this week? What did you get?

I am going out in my boat today. We will be mostly partying but I will make it to shore with a Zodiak boat to some tide pools for some stuff. No fish though, not here. I did find a great place to collect sponge for my moorish Idol though.
Today I will only get sponge, crabs, amphipods and such. Just food type stuff. I will have to wait to go with you for the fish. As you know, in the Sound, collecting fish is useless.
Have a great Fourth of July.
Paul

Always wondered bout people catching their own fish round world. Each summer we catch tropicals in Sydney that come down the East Australian Current (yes like in nemo) from the Barrier Reef. We get many diff surgeons, naso, chaetodon, angels, lionfish, dart gobies, triggers, wrasse, boxfish, zanclus, etc.. good fun, need a hard to get permit of fisheries though

Nice pic Fishfinder and Artik :)

Those of you that are wondering about collecting technique may want to check out FAMA magazine. Most issues have a feature called the Dip Netter. Often times the article will explain how the author collected that months specimen.

These 2 busted out the vouge pose for the camera.

Flame Wrasse and Bandit Angel, The real highlight was getting the Bandit to eat only 2 days after capture! I found it in 60ft which is so crazy for supposed deepwater angels.

Nice haul mate.
Interesting you use 1/2", all my nets are 1/4" or "pseudo net" (for royal dottybacks and assessors).
Do you work the 65' net alone, or do you buddy up to get the YTs in it?
30'-35' is my longest net (solo). 5' drop.
