Fishfinder thanks for the pics. Your setup looks awesome :)

Your welcome. feel free to ask what ever you wish to know and i will answer to the best of my knowledge.

way cool.. I was just in south carolina and caught a sea urchin! loL I thought it was cool.. but nothing like that you guys are pulling out of the ocean!

Fish finder, I may be taking time off soon. I will let you know. I spend a lot of time on my boat, but it is in the Sound and in all my years of diving there I only saw one seahorse. All the other stuff is in the South.
Take care.
Paul

What technique did you use to capture the urchin

Sunfishh I had a sea urchin collecting business for a few years here in NY. (Urchin Searchin Enterprise) I would collect about 100 northern purple urchins (using SCUBA) in about half an hour. I sold them to hobbiests, stores and researchers. I kept them in a homemade chilled tank.

I spent most of my life on Long Island and I am astounded! I never knew you could find those types of fish there. I can only wonder what I could find here in SC. I live near the ocean and sound with inlets and connecting marshes surrounding me. My dream is to get certified to dive one day and travel to dive the world's reefs. Maybe I should start here. Here is a rough map of the area where I live: http://216.109.125.130/search/cache...hilton+head+map&d=ZtDYhjmtMwAJ&icp=1&.intl=us

Fish Finder- During what months do you fish for these fish?

All depend's on the weather and where the gulf streem shift's. Most year's it's during july-oct

Fish Finder and other Collectors,

Can someone tell me how to net catch a fish???

Diveing or in the shalow sea grass?

Is anyone here collecting in Hawaii? I am going be there (Maui) in August. I'm a certified diver with over 100 dives and I've speared a few but I've never tried to catch a live fish. I'd love to go out with someone that knows how to do it and learn a bit. I could take a day and go over to any of the islands.

Any takers? I'd pay expenses and buy you a nice dinner afterwards. Respond here, or PM me if interested.

there is one guy who posted on this thread that dose. Look though and when you find him shoot him a pm

its really easy. Just take a plastic jar of good size and place it next to a rock or near the fish. Then try to get the fish to swim into ther jar. It helps to have someone else help you. Then when it swims in close the jar.

I fish collect at the jettes in Pensacola Fl, I get alot of damsels, a few butterfly fishs, belted sandfish, juvi blue heads, slipperys, small groupers, snappers(grey, lain, and rarely tiger) and also when the sarggasm weed floats in I collect, file fish, sarggasm fish, ect...

Manderin, thats easy. Just get certified to dive and go.
Diving is one of my other hobbies. I don't dive anywhere near as much as I used to but for many years I went every weekend from my boat. Now I mainly go to the tropics but of course you can't do that all the time. When my wife and I go on vacation we almost always go to a place where the diving is good. We are not tourists who tour on busses, we tour on our own and we dive. It is the best way to add to your knowlege of this hobby.
Snorkling is also a good way, sometimes better because you can do it all day and it's practically free. There are plenty of things in the see that you will never see in a tank.
Have a great day.
Paul

Yeah I agree with Paul B about the snorkeling thing, thats what I do and i can get pretty much everything a diver can get in my area.
