Who here collect's there own fish

several years ago I caught a couple of Queen Triggers drag netting off my stepfathers sailboat going from lido beach to block Island.

YEsterday I caught a doctor fish (tang), a hi-hat, a couple cocoa damsels, a couple banded coral shrimp. I could have caught more but I dont want too many fish in my 125.

Yesterday I collected a bunch of sponge, does that count? I collect it to feed to my moorish Idol.

I didn't go fish collecting yet. Only crabs, snails, amphipods and sponge. I am out on my boat all the time but you can't collect tropicals in the Sound. Let me know when they are in.

There is a chance that after college I will end up in southwest Florida, Ft Myers area. Anyone catching anything in this area? Also say I went out and spent the $800 to get scuba certified and got all the necessary equipment. What process would I need to go through to sell collected fish to people online or local stores? What equipment are you guys using?

What quarenteen process do you guys put your collected fish through, do you treat them with anything?

Thanks so much for that i have alway's wondered what they were there since there are so many tropical fish there. I already knew the live rock is a big BIG no no there. I hooked up on a peace when i was fishing in the gulf of mexico. One of the nicest peaces of live rock i have ever seen. And the capton said throw it back before we all get in big truble

Any of you guys know a good place to get small barrier nets in particular for scuba and snorkel collection?

Any idea if there are good fish off the south west Florida coast near Ft Myers and Naples?

Just get out there with your snorkle gear and find a rock pile. When you find that you will find your fish. ;)

I use gill net's when im collecting with more then one person snorkling or diveing. That is prob what your looking for.

No not a gill net... searched around and here's a few shots of the type I'm looking for... You isolate the fish you're after with a ~5' diameter barrier net and go in with a hand net... similar to these pics... Most people make their own, but I was wondering if someone online had these available...

Thanks for the help...

I collect like this. I smear makeral guts on my wife (pictured here in Tahiti) Then when the sharks go by, I trip them and get them in a head lock.
