Why i will NEVER shop at PET WORLD again.

I bought a automatic top off value at the end of January and dont often have time to return things. I never even opened the box. Anyway, i walk in and ask to return it.

Do you have a receipt. No returns without receipt. YES i cry, I have passed the 1st part of my quest.

The girl takes the box and inspects it. I have to have it checked out back to see if its used. I said (its new). anyway, 5 minutes later, the item is deemed unused and I am able to leap over the 2nd hurdle.

She smiles, Oh, there is a 30 day return policy. Your over that. The life is drained from my being.. Before i slink away, defeated by 2 pre-teen's i ask are you sure? Do you have any idea how much I spend in this place? This is the last time i will come in here.. Sorry..

oh well, anyone want to buy a coralife top off value? NO RETURNS!

:)

Why would anyone shop there anyway. Since they are double the price you can buy online. The only things I have bought there are a fish (which jumped) and water, both salt and ro and a battery powered air bubbler during the hurricane. Its a terrible store.

But the hours are good.

As mentioned, they're good for emergencies..

To be fair, almost anyone else will do the same thing, though - whether it's Best Buy, Circuit City, Walmart, etc... I mean, you're talking about 2 full months, here. That might be expecting a bit too much, I think.

Of course, they could've done, like, store credit, or something to appease you, so to just send you back out the door sucks on their part. Did you ask for the manager, to make him/her aware of the situation, and how it would affect your decision to shop there in the future?

I assume you're talking about the one up by the Tower Shops, and yeah, there's a bunch of ditzes in there...

However, if you're ever out west, there's one on Pines and like the 170's - nice family-owned Pet World. My wife bought 2 of her dogs there, and the family actually used to live either in our development, or the next. I forget, because it was my wife they told, and it's not really important enough for me to waste memory cells on it...

If your talking about "Pet Wonder" on Pines Blvd. and Dykes they are a dump. Went there the other day and to my amazement I saw they had 2-3 frags of Aptaisias for sale. Not to mention they had a huge parrot fish for sale... this think was a good 12"+ in a tiny holding tank. Sad.

i once tried to buy a fish (a rare pleco) that was mismarked after the salesman insisted that the price marked was correct... this was after i told him it was missmarked, and showed him a common pleco that was smaller and marked higher... after the 20 minutes it took him to bag it he is finaly told that the price was horribly wrong .... duh...

then the three teenage salesmen started yelling at me accross the store " that fish is like 70 dollars dude" as if i was the one that changed the price. total incompitence AND indignance all at the same shop! well i complained to the manager who quietly followed me out the door, and his reply was... "oh im sorry that happened." you can guess how much money i spend there.

In fairness it was too long. But thats not the reason to avoid the store. You do that cuz they are expensive and they stink.

Heck when I was shopping for my light they wanted double of what dr foster wanted.

Price is not everything. I wouldn't buy from the Dr's if they paid me.

??? Y I have bought from them several times. They always get it right.

When I was the manager of a Pet supermarket I took everything back as long as we sold it even without a reciept. I made ALOT of loyal customers like that.

Here how it works. If I take somthing back and send it back to the manufacturer they are not going to say NO you can't return that to me. they are going to just give the company credit for it or send us a new one to replace it which I will then sell for full retail price. They are not going to risk ****ing off a chain of stores who probably buys 100's of those items a year.

So IMO companies who stick to return policies like that are stupid for possibly losing long term customers.

...Here how it works. ...
Working for a manufacturer that is true of a retailer who does enough business to buy direct. But a smaller store who buys through a distributer does not get that luxury. They own it. Which means if the small retailer cannot sell it or the price has dropped they take the hit. Which for a small store can mean a good % of profits for the day.

ek9, I know where you're coming from, but I don't buy livestock from those places to begin with.

About a week or so ago, lokoing for airline tubing or something, I went to the Petco at Flamingo and Pines, and they had a dang HUGE lionfish in one of those teeny tanks....

i WAS interested in a pair of Oscellaris clownfish (don;t know what I was thinking) when they had them on sale last month.

Heh - when I asked them to do a salinity test, man, it was off the scale! The hydrometer went OVER the highest marked number...

You can imagine what they said, "Oh, I just started at THIS store, and I haven;t had a chance to check everything out yet - I'm going to work on that now" yeah right.

Same Petco had, about 3 weeks earlier, in one of the tanks, a dead fish up in the corner, stuck to the water intake. It had been dead, and stuck there so long, it had no eyeballs, and the color had faded to like a pale yellow.

Moral of the story: You don't shop at PET stores for fish.
You shop at FISH shops for fish.

They all have the same problem: lack of maintenance, lack of care, lack of attention to detail.

Sucks to be a fish in one of those shops....

... enough to care ...
Only in the USA. Most other countries people take pride in there jobs. No matter how small. Thats why Japan out does us and India gets the telemarketing.

Japan, yes.

India gets telemarketing, call centers, software development, etc... because of sheer cheapness-of-labor.They're more than happy to work for 1/5 of what US workers get, and for them, it's a ton of money!

You are quite right about the smaller stores. I was mainly referring to the larger chains that still do this kind of thing.

Small stores become large chains and still think like small stores. That transition from a small retailer to a large retailer is a challenging one that most retailers cannot do.

I just think its short sighted to **** off a customer of any kind. return something at home depot, no receipt, NO PROBLEM. Pet world is not exactly small, i would imagine they could return the item to the manufacturer/distributer. Certainly, the receipt says 30 days and thats fine. The item was not even opened, they could have given me credit and i would probably have used it up on that trip alone. Anyway, just my 2 cents. I will gladly drive to a small LFS and spend the extra $'s when i buy salt, food, livestock, parts, pumps and whatever else..

Treeman I agree with you. Being apart of this hobby we should support our local lfs. Buying online really gives those guys the short end of the stick. The Dr's dont pay taxes in our community. Nor do they provide us with a store to visit.
