I do not agree with this statement, it is all about the store owners expectations of their workers, more money is not going to make anybody be more respectful or caring.
I once worked in a LFS back in NJ and although the pay wasn't good the job helped me get a good discount on my livestock and dry goods so it was worthy not to mention it was fun, the owner had a list of regular maintenance as soon as we arrived, so we were constantly cleaning and grooming the tanks so there was never algae in the tanks, water changes were done daily by section, the livestock always did very good due to this and the customers were treated like royalty by the owner and therefore by us too.
I find that business in general that has working owners that care for the patrons usually reflects on the employees treatment and this businesses usually tend to survive.
