Wild and Maricultured SPS Reefers Thread

My god that pet monster is insane.

Yes, it is quite nice. That shot is under royal blue leds and T5's, it can look more blue depending on the lighting it is under. Here is my most recent FTS, it is on the top of the left pillar to give you a sense of its size (I have been fragging it a lot to boot):

My whole tank is wild caught mostly Aussies I've always had trouble with the milli from Aussie I have a few that made it but most of the time they struggle for me ... But for sure Aussie sps are the best with vibrant colors

Do u have any pointers to keep the millis alive I have. 2 that are Ok do they like alot of flow ?light? Etc.. I heard from the wholsale that most aussie corals come from deeper down while fiji are shallow

The Aussie millepora is A.Spathulatha which is pretty demanding of strong intermittent water flow and light.

In fact, the majority of aussie acroporas are just that - strictly from my personal experience.

Couldn't you say that about all acroporas though, not just Aussie ones?

I knew you guys would appreciate that piece of wild SSC :) I have 11 individual frags of the two pieces i've scored so far spread throughout the reef lol - if i find more it's going in the tank and yes i know i have a SSC problem but i don't care.........:wildone:
That blue stag is looking very nice Michael, are those light blue growing tips or is it the LED's. Either way i like both the stags in that pic.
I would agree that it's something of a crap shoot when looking at shipping tressed corals but you do get an eye for what does what in your tank after a number of years and i ignore a great many acros that i bet many would jump at simply because i know it looks much prettier in it's pastel shipping stressed state than it does when actually growing happily, don't even get me started about bloody green acros..........:deadhorse:

My blue stag is making himself right at home in the green stag lol.

hey biggles, follow up questions:

1. How often are you trimming your pieces in order to prevent them from growing into each other? Every few weeks a few inches worth of frags?

2. Do you find your mari/wild to grow much slower or quicker than non mari/wild cultures?

Few new Aussies

Far left side of tank, though the glass.I think the underwater camera takes the best pics in the tank, it went with the wife on vaction.

I hear 'ya.
My journey into SPS is going surprisingly well.
The ones I got from Joe are doing wonderfully.
I guess I can keep more than Chalices.
:)

Heres some pics of the new Aussies going in later this morning.Vendor takes way better pics than me, so I'll use his. :)

Hey mate, i only have to intervene once or twice a month at the moment mainly due to poor placement on my behalf lol. I quite often stick a piece i trim off somewhere else if it's pretty and after a while you end up with the mess of frags multiplying like i have going on atm.......
I have only ever kept wild sourced SPS so i can't compare them to aquacultured stuff unfortunately but i would say from my experiences that 3/4"-1" tip growth a month is what i consider a fast 'grows like a weed' acro and most of my stuff grows about 1/4" a month on average i guess - bit hard to judge overall.

I have found that all the milli's and prostrata's i've bought to favor medium to low light so it's very obvious they're being collected deep now days and the awesome color varieties show why it's worth going to greater depths to collect. I would try your milli's in the bottom half of your tank Brent as none of mine like being toasted.

Damn mate the color depth on this thing is amazing, awesome piece :) Your TFS is just beautiful. I've never seen a Surharsonoi or any similar scarcely polyped 'deep water' acro for sale unfortunately, yours is a ripper
My fluoro glow in the dark lime acro is aculeus and it grows terribly slow and is touchy as hell to low alk - he's my alk goof alarm lol.

You've been busy snapping up acros Volcano lol
This piece looks almost identical to the one i bought a few weeks back.

Mine when i got it 2 weeks ago with purple tips.

I chopped it up and stuck pieces in a few spots. Not only has it settled in fast but it's made a rather obvious color shift towards blue rather than the purple it was when i first added it. The stylo is hot pink but i've under saturated the pic so you can see more detail of the blue bleeding back into the branches.

Great thread. My first 2 years diving into sps every maricultured piece browned out. After a lot of trial & error, I finally got all my parameters in line w/ low nitrates & low phosphates. My system & param. have been stable for almost 3 years & I've been keeping wild/maricultured pieces successfully w/ colors actually improving.

Hello...
I am loving this...
I have a problem I wish if u guys can help I love sps so much but my problem not able to keep them...
I stopped using calcium reactor and adding manual till I bring dosing pump...
But the thing every time I add sps it either get bleached or lose the color ill some photo's to see what am saying....
I have a skimmer, biopalleta, phosphate reactor, and refugium...
My lights I am some how regreting it cause now am seeing 90% of sps keepers love MH and t5... so when I started my hobby I went with top led light vertex illumina 260...

Now I need to find out what they all are, so I have some idea where to place them. Mine's still acclimating in low light, let me know what it likes.

Hey mate, thanks for joining in. Glad to hear you persevered and are being rewarded with colorful acros. Feel free to post some pics if you have any as we all like pics :) What do you try to keep your nitrates and phos at and what levels do you see problems appearing if you have any goofs.

Hi mate, it sounds like you have a lot going on in your reef equipment and gizmo wise. Can you give us some more info on your tank size and all your water parameters. Is that LED unit full spectrum or just blue white. Your tank looks very clean so you might be over doing the nutrient stripping but it's hard to say until we know more. I'm sure everyone here will join in with advice once we know more. :)

Good news for you mate, i have it in high, medium and low and it colors up in all conditions. Best is medium then low then high placed so i'd suggest going with half way down the water column or lower. It doesn't like getting belted with water flow either btw.

I came over after reading this http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2340269

Anyone kept the plug on their maricultured sps and experience problems?

Can't get mari's here but hopefully some of the other guys will pipe up with their experiences.

Tank is a few days shy of 10 months so that's a good enough excuse as any for a quick vid of the wild bunch :spin3:
