wild SPS corals, Marshall Islands

Don't you need any kind of permit to collect corals? I mean, a lot places around the world required certain permits or certain amount...I m pretty sure there is a some sort of law in Marshall Island for wild corals collection

of course you would need permission and permits for collection AND Export of live goods from the RMI government. From my understanding, they haven't issued new permits for the corals/live rock. thats why you havent seen any Marshall Island live rock in such a long time. the restrictions on ornamental fish are not as strict, and you will see species available on the open market, with most of the diving and collecting happening around the capital, majuro, which is in the next atoll over.

Im just a simpleton moron wandering around at low tide with a bucket. trust me, no large scale enterprise business going on over here. im just a fart in a hurricane, impact wise. when i leave here, everything is back in the ocean where i got it from.

some more pics (sorry if im duplicating a few, i dont have a good system for uploading)........

How about some info on your tank?

Sure. ive kept a saltwater tank since 1992, probably on a couple of years gap with not having a tank. Back then, no one thought of keeping corals. undergravel filters and Normal Output 'shop lights' did the trick just fine.

Funny little random anecdotal note. I loaded up with reef supplies before I came out here, Brian @ TB Aquatics was super nice to deal with, getting the list sorted.

The list was rather large, and $$$. It's amazing what random items you may think you'll need for a few years to run a tank........I ordered frag glue. needless to say, I haven't used it...why on earth would I need frag glue:lolspin::lolspin:
I wonder what TB Aquatics return policy is?

here's the run down:

57G oceanic Illuminata, rimless
Glass holes overflow, left side, 700 gph with cover.
29G sump, DIY
JBJ Viper 250W with DE Aquamaxx 20K/EVC 20K
BM 180CS cone skimmer
Eheim 1260 return pump
partial flow split to run TLF w. NP biopellets and
converted schuran CR with sulfur media and aragonite for nitrate control
BRS dosing pumps x 2, one for Cal, one for Alk
10 gallon top off tank, gravity fed thru solenoid, double float switch
Aquamedic magnetic Kalk stirrer between top off tank, and solenoid
Vorthech MP10 x 2 not wireless
AC Jr. w. Ph probe
ViaAqua Titanium heater

I found that NSW was very inconsistent, depending on if it rained, direction of the wind etc. I ordered some Tropic Marin (shipping was outrageous) to use instead. before my crash, I had managed to get the water @ 100% TM. I have to start this process over, since I've been doing mass water changes every other day, to the tune of 25 gallons w NSW. I think everything has settled in. amazingly, I didn't lose a single fish or LPS and my huge blue linkia is doing fine.

ill gradually start to use the TM in the next few weeks, as everything has settled, reading wise.

For lighting, im keenly interested in getting a LED setup. i dont pay for electricity here (white collar welfare), so power consumption is of no concern. light spill is really important, and i think the LED's are starting to get a better track record, performance wise.

thanks for asking.

does you wild caught sps turn brown after a couple of weeks?

the same rules apply, re: cycling here. i actually cycled with some newbie SPS corals, fish right away. since everything is literally minutes from ocean to tank, especially the live rock the cycle was minimal, no real spikes. to answer your question, yes they did brown out the first few months, i would take them out and put them on my coralhead out in the lagoon and they would color back. ive actually had a few 'recycled' corals make the trip back and forth. now that my system has established itself , +- 6 months, the SPS are keeping colors fine, and getting nice PE and encrusting

from brown - they turned green - then turned back to the original color?

i have the same expirience all wild caught turns brown then colors back to dark green.

as i pointed out, i only get 3-4 corals when i go out, sometimes none. it's a bit of self policing, coupled with the fact i can only cram so many corals in a 58G. when i want something different, i return what i had in my display onto the reef

Are you sure it's a good idea to return these corals back to their natural habitat after being in your tank?

Great photos! Thx for sharing.

not too sure what the alternative would be, and why i wouldnt. i dont have the luxury of ordering something from live aquaria and having it sent to me. If someone released something stateside, that would be releasing a non-native species, a big no no. Everything in my tank is local, so im putting it back where i found it...just in a different spot :) the only variable i have is the salt composition, sysnthetic vs. NSW.

perhaps some fish collecting pictures next.

i generally steer away from wild corals.....they tend to not do well in tanks. i had more success with aquacultured back home.

the only variable i have is the salt composition,

Or the fish food you feed everyday might have bacteria, virus, etc that survive the frozen process. A lot of time, taking a few things from the ocean for non-commercial usage isn't a big deal; but releasing these animal back after being in contact with us is. I see that you might not have much option but it's still something to think about. No one would have known a tiny non-native algae would have caused millions of dollars in Ca. It's important to think about the consequence.

well, returning corals or whatever from your tank back to wild normally is a big no since if you have other stuffs came from diff loc, you can potential introduced a non-native species or some disease and kill off everything else.

Aah the beauty of posting on RC. i seriously think youre putting waaaay to much thought into this. last time i checked, there's no recorded cases of persons to fish disease:strooper:

i suggest you pull up google earth to see how remote i am. If they tested nuclear warheads on Bikini Atoll in the 40's and 50's and the coral heads are thriving after all these years,....some fish food isnt going to wipe everything out.:lmao::lmao:

Good reefing to you.

c

they blasted the place with more nukes than imaginable...to many negative people out there...how is freakin fish food gonna be bad....what ever you do,just dont pee in the ocean cause thats gonna cause some un-fixable bacteria wipe out...lmao....how far is bikini from where you are in the islands?
