wild SPS corals, Marshall Islands

Wow these pics are absolutely incredible! Thanks very much for letting us live vicariously through you!

Truly a reefers' dream come true!

Your pics are amazing and helps remind me why I'm in this hobby!

I suppose the name of the forum is SPS keepers....ill post a FTS sometime tihis week. the fun corals i collected are still acclimating, and i think my butterfly keeps picking once extended..he's been an outstanding citizen so far.

No second dive today, got stuck on the couch watching UFC, plus a little drizzly.

I can't believe the size of those Lobophillia collonies! Those things must be 800-1000 years old! When you're feeling cheap and used......thanks for the pictures.

It would be interesting to see what some of the parameters are near those corals. I know we all have heard what NSW levels generally are...but it would be great to see first hand what the levels of say Ca, MG, Alk, etc. are.

Hmm...wish there was a way to get a PAR meter down there too...lol.

Amen!! I have long wished collectors would give some basic information about the environment where they collected a coral. Especially the really expensive ones. I know it is impossible and a pipe dream but it would be so much better for the animals and us. Again great pictures and a great thread......thank you!

I thought I would be a bit more proactive in interacting with everyone that takes the time to post up a reply. looking at some of my favorite threads on RC, I find that the OP takes the time to actually respond to people. why cant I do the same?

I'm not a biologist, not some rich guy with a bunch of money that can afford the super duper latest and greatest, just an average reef geek who happens to have the world's largest frag tank 2 minutes away.

Someone asked for chalices in the wild. there's one posted. I'm sorry you're not gonna be wowed, its rather simple and plain. morphs are hard to spot...sometimes you're just trying to take everything in at once, it's hard to spot stuff.

enjoy, I hope it lends some educational benefit to see specimens in the wild.

Holy crap is awsome down there. thanks for letting us in on all of your discoveries.

no worries, yes, I smile more here than I did in when I lived in Texas, yes....AWESOME!!

Hey,you started this thread..lol...thanks for my weekly fix....pics are amazing..

you need therapy...............:fun2:
The pics with the Idols was amazing; my favorite fish.

ill try to get into the fish more a bit later, to see sohals in wild, they're huge! mated pairs of filefish are sooo tempting, but they'll clean your tank out in no time.

still waiting to go collecting soon.

Wow! More. Now!

sorry bro, not on a vacation, gotta go to work too.

sheesh, just trying to keep up with you guys, you know what i mean.:eek1::rollface:

its really breathtaking to see these formations. they are very grand in scale and a bit colossal in scale when you're sitting at the base and you look straight up at a mountain of corals. you do think to yourself when your down there, man this has gotta be centuries old, I wonder what's in the middle of the pile? LOL I prefer to collect here, so I don't have to go and tear stuff up. if I get a lobo, trust me, it's on the rubble pile and loose. if I see an acro i like, if it's not affixed to a lobo branch, i don't get it. you see a bunch of stuff you like, but I'm not too keen on ripping up the place just because I its appealing to me. a bit of patience.

I've been meaning to test NSW, just haven't gotten around to dusting off the test kits. I'll do it in the next few weeks. what I can tell you from my dive computer, its TOASTY. minimum of 84 degrees, all the way down to 70 feet. we never dive with wetsuits, too much of a hassle getting in and out. t-shirt is fine, if you want to get fancy, wear a rash guard. I don't think they make a cord long enough for a par meter
:hmm5:

this is simply too amazing !

thanks for posting :)

no worries, glad you're enjoying my version of the local fish store.

Damn that is beautiful! I am happy for you....but agree on the isolation you can face.

yes isolated, island fever, no. I haven't even come close to exploring my own island, some places I haven't been, and I'm coming up on a year.

NVM about all the other islands in the atoll. I think if you have your basic routine related stuff, you can be happy anywhere. Racquetball, a must for me, hence the screen name. I wouldn't have come out here if they didn't have two brand new glass back courts, no way. I get to keep an aquarium, something I enjoy. have the wife and kiddo, all is good in the hood. were coming up on our annual leave, and I'm not really excited about leaving 'the rock'. were still up in the air on where to go, Kosrai, Ponpei, Hawaii, Europe....still undecided. thankfully, it's a paid vacation, airfare and allowance.

My goodness! I'm sure there are many cons to your situation...but geez...an all expense paid VACATION?? Thats too much. Please pinch yourself. Lol.

I earlier posted that shark dive I was on in the Bahamas. That was a week long trip in June where we dove 4 times a day and 1 night dive. Temp was constant 84 degrees also. Im interested in the NSW testing too!
