Yeah so my Carpet ate my Clown

Hello everyone, Well last night was not a very good one. For some reason or another my Occ clowns were swimming rather close to my carpet anemone. I was kinda excited to see them actually checking it out. That ended very soon. My mis-bar hit the top of the carpet and it closed around it and ate it. I was shocked. So then my other clown, my first fish ever, who is almost 2 years old goes to the bottom of the carpet. As soon as he hits it it freezes. I could tell it was stuck and there was no way I was losing him to. I shoved a net it right at the carpets mouth so he couldnt pull him in. After a nice tug of war I finally dug out "nemo". You should have seen all the broken tentacle tips alll over the clowns face and back. I was always a little worried that this would happen but everyone told me it was impossible. After getting the one clown out the carpet wouldnt let go of the net I pulled and pulled for a good half hour. I really wanted to pull the carpet right out of the tank but he is rather strong. So what do you think? Has this ever happened before. My clowns were not weak either I have had them for a while and never had any problems with them used a LTA but the Carpet really wanted to eat them. I am very sad, would have been even worse if it would have got both of them.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

That had to be no fun to watch.

I have no experience with carpets, but it's obvious it was hungry.

Do you feed it silversides, etc? Just curious.

Yeah I feed it all the time. like 3 peices of krill every other day. I have had it for about 7 months. Now it had eaten a bunch of fish before that didnt bother me but I wasent expecting it to eat the clowns.

Is that a Stichodactyla Helianthus i.e. Sun Anemone. It does look like the Haddoni Variety, but the Sun Anemone's are very, very sticky and will not ever host a clown, more or so eat them than host them. I have one in my tank and I thought I bought a Gigantea, but it wasn't. Here is the thread:

Sorry it did not work out for the clowns, it can be hit and miss with them.

Yeah, I was just about to buy a beautiful blue S. Haddoni a couple weeks ago. The day before I was to purchase it, it ate the owners clowns. Needless to say, I enjoy my pair too much.. sadly enough, the male jumped out yesterday though

Sorry about your clowns.. keep in mind , carpets ARE fish eaters. There's always a chance things like this can happen.

Sorry about your clowns.. keep in mind , carpets ARE fish eaters. There's always a chance things like this can happen.

I feel for you, I had a beautiful pair of True Percs, and the female jumped out and died

Very, very sad. They were both so healthy and happy.

Now I have a solo clown.
Still pretty, it's just I bought the pair because they were a pair.

You should really have done your research here at RC. It may well have saved your fish's life. Looks like a nice healthy haddoni though. Perhaps you should get clowns that naturally host these animals.

I have had 2 percs, 2 tangs and a scooter blenny become meals. No more carpets for me in a mixed reef.

Carpets are such beautiful animals. I really love seeing them. However, I feel the same way about having one in a mixed reef. And since I'm not likely to start a species tank any time soon, that means no carpets for me.

Umm yeah ok whatever buddy I am always doing research here on RC. 1. Ive seen plenty of haddonis with percs and occs, and 2 Even if I would have got clowns that naturally hosts them whos to say it wouldnt haven eaten them as well. So I really dont know where you were going with that.

He meant that you should of been aware of the fact that your carpet might eat your clowns. He didn't meant that in a negative way.

S. haddoni is a very aggressive fish eater. Even large one like Naso tang. Anyway, species that naturally host by this carpet should noe be eatten. These clowns are A. akindynos, A. chrysogaster, A. chrysopterus, A. clarkii, A. polymnus, A. sebae. Both Clark and Saddle back are beautiful (IMO) and easily available. I love the Black and white Saddle back clowns.
Consider these species or consider get rid of your anemone. Good luck

Didn't mean to offend. When I read the portion of your post quoted below I assumed you hadn't read here because this is a common problem with haddoni.

Yeah Im sorry I was in a hurry and really wasent thinking. I know it has a high rate of eating fish. It has eaten plenty in my tank and I didnt have a problem with that. I was told by many people that it wouldnt eat the clowns. I always though it could but everyone told me no. Now its been in the tank for like 7 months and the clowns never wanted anything to do with it. Why is it that it wants to eat the clowns but will not eat sexy anemone shrimp?
