Are these frags your Red planet?

Yea, Not only does it have amazing color but it has been growing like crazy under leds. The frags are new growth as such and I am sure that you are aware that new growth on a table is usually exempt of the color from the underlying symbiotic alga.. I love seeing all of the new growth which demonstrates the tank is running optimally. Here is a pics of the colony post fragged. Considering the LED is such high PAR the coral does release its symbiotic algae (green). I did find a colony that fell into one of my caves for I dont know how long and it had that nice green in it that you are properly expecting. But too I keep frags at my sandbed 36" down and I need to keep the PAR higher than usual but I am glad that I have the flexibility to dim my fixtures when I move them up.

Cheers

I will say that even though the new growth color is not as colorful as the base id take that the coral any day over the one that looks like this. Adding all of the pink/purple to the photo is not helping! :)

Uhh..............I asked a simple question. What's your problem??

I apologize, but the way that you phrased that as " your red planet" as to imply that it is different than others, I took that as if you were trying to communicate that it wasn't colorful as it should be. Now lets be honest If I am posting pictures of MY FRAGS and have the labled left to right well I guess then you already knew the answer. So now that we are really having a discussion about it color I researched what is colorful from your perspective and respond accordingly.

If truly all you only wanted to know that if the coral that you cropped/zoomed and posted is the ORA Red Planet.... The answer is yes.

Thanks.

i think Ed just saw a nice looking coral and wanted to know what it is. just a little jumpy defending the leds on this thread lol. but i'm on your side

Thanks Bob, I would agree it is a nice looking coral indeed. To be honest I am not out to defend LEDS but simply trying to educate people on technology and its advantages/efficiency at a low cost. I do get annoyed when people do make claims though and don't seem to back it up or just stop responding. I guess it is my background in being in the technical field so long.

To be honest when people have a legit question and a serious interest id think they would PM instead of taking the time to crop and zoom save and post. Id image that those in the game would have been familiar with this coral by now. But I could be wrong. So not jumpy but realistic.

Furthermore it seems that ED has been collecting SPS for sometime much longer than I and find it amusing that he doesn't know what a red planet it... Let me rephrase it "My Red Planet" So not jumpy but realistic.

i have been in the game for a long time too. (check my join date) and at first glance i didnt recognize it as a red planet either
as most red planets will show at least a hint of green unless blasted with light. it could just be the way you took the pic. or that your par from your leds is giving it extreme light with no visible green even in the base

I appreciate your sign on date to RC. I signed into the hobby back in the early 90's. I think this might help, straight from ORA,:

"Description:The ORA Red Planet is one of our most popular corals. It is a tabling Acropora with red and pink corallites and a metallic green base. Polyp coloration on this coral is a deep red and the new growth is light pink to white. Under intense lighting the coral may lose the attractive green coloration, it will return if the coral is moved to a lower light area."

Thanks for posting the colony picture"¦"¦.."¦it looks just like your frags. I'm just evaluating certain colored corals (reds) under LED setups for my own research. I want to eventually go to a LED or LED/t5 combo and don't want to lose the kind of colors I'm getting now.
I'll probably go with some kind of DIY combo, so just picking up tidbits from DIY setups.

For anyone looking for more info to help"¦"¦..these are two recent excellent articles that will really help.

I don't need any help taking pictures or using white balance. My tank is currently covered everywhere in light pink, dark pink, and purple coralline.

For anyone interested, you can go over to my tank thread. The whole thread is basically progression shots. From the beginning pages you can see all the white rocks and egg crate, some algae. As the pictures progress you'll see the coralline explode over time and of course my picture skills have improved since I started the thread. I don't use any pink bulbs or pink enhancement in my pics"¦"¦"¦..nor any saturation of colors. My tank lighting is very white compared to most tanks. I have to do very little post editing other than some minor brightness/contrast & sharpness adjustments if needed.

I keep all my RAW format pictures, from any photos I post, so if anyone wants to see those unedited I can provide them.

You aren't far away..........your'e more than welcome to see my tank in person.

As far as the peach rainbow picture you extracted from this thread---

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2281155

I'd much rather have that over a Red planet which are a dime a dozen around here and grow like weeds. The peach rainbow is different and unique and not seen in hundreds of tanks around. It's also a stag horn"¦"¦"¦..not a lot of multi color staghorns around. Well see how it looks once it grows out nicely, but there's green, orange, pink , toped off by red polyps. You can see the potential it has in my tank thread.

That frag pack was posted as an ugly ducking pack. It was a bunch of runts & browned frags. The wole idea is to get some nice frags cheap that will grow into beauties..........there's nothing in those frags to enhance or no reason to enhance them.

Alright then... As for colors in general with my tank with cheap Chinese leds, Id say that they are breath taking. Early on I only had 4 apollo fixtures over the tank which resulted in a major coverage issue. Subsequently I ventured into BioPellets which removes essential nutrients from the system.

What I found is getting full coverage with any type of LED whether it is multi color or just blue and white the coral will get its needs. As far as color, Adding more fish, coral food and AA seemed to do the trick. But I do think that LEDS provide an advantage of growth over other types of lighting because of the 6500K. This I think lends to slightly mute colors but I ended up alternating spectrum from a 10K to 20K estimated every other month. If you look at my tank most of that stuff started from 1" frags and have only been in the tank 10 months.

Lighting a 26" tank can be a challenge especially keeping SpS at its lowest @ the Sand bed. Sorry to take the question the wrong way. But for a guy that basically took some risks and made an major investment in LEDS, a huge tank, and SPS corals the only thing I have heard on this site for some of the "older members" is negativity.

As for Color I still believe that the best color comes from MH but LEDS are good and the efficiency are worth having the good color vs inefficient best color (speaking from a big tank perspective).

Hope that helps.

An monti, milli and stylo. That grew quite a bit in 4-6 months. Also The stylo fell on a acan and lost two branches.

I changed my lighting from 27watt cf to the true lumen pro leds. I purchased a led retro fit kit for my 12 gal. Nanocube and have been pleased with the results. All of my sps have at least doubled in size in 6 months. The color of the corals are bright and pop, but some corals had to be relocated for better coloration.I did have the first 4-6 leds go out in the strip on both true lumen pros. But current-usa warrantied them with no hassle. Some pics to show the growth.

I love my AI SOL super blue.
This tank has been LED since the beginning but I can say my growth is awesome and the colors are very pleasing as well (but that is also husbandry)

LEDs definitely work and I will most likely continue to use them for my tank career.
