If the tank was large enough... but there becomes a point when the tank size and viewing pleasure start to work against one another

Yes, there's a point of diminishing return for tank size. What is that threshhold, in your opinion?

I'm thinking 12' long and 6' wide is the practical limit. With a 4' height, that's 2150g.

I think all those Dwarf Angels might work in a 2150g community tank.

Well I'll add a few here that haven't been mentioned, that are not so unobtainable or ridiculously priced.

Tiles
Flashing and purples (both are stunning fish)

Butterflies:
Meyers
Ornate
Arabian
Hong Kong
Kite (ocellatus)

How about a fat healthy Moorish idol.

I really like Pilotfish too, but doubt I'll ever own a tank big enough for one.

Yes, the Meyeri and Ornatissimus Butterflies are among my few top choices, though not particularly rare.

About the only expensive/rare fish that would entice me these days is the Tygerpyge. That really is 'rare' as opposed to just being difficult to collect.

Yes, that's always an interesting distinction.

Rare in the trade for various general reasons.
Rare because of collection difficulties.
Rare by actual available quantities.

In my dream tank:
Pair of cross hatches
Regal angel
Achilles tang
5 moorish idols
Pair of black ice clowns
Pair of long nose Hawks
Pair of diamond gobies
Pair of Tasha gobies with pair of pistol shrimp
Trio of purple and yellow tang
Regal tang
Chevron tang
Snowflake moray eel
In display refugium:
Pair of ruby red dragonettes
Pair of mandarins
And a red band tail wasp fish in another refugium

Certain stores, contacts etc.
If your serious about some, contact Jordan at Among The Reef. He can get great fish and at truly good prices. I have my resellers license so I know wholesale prices. He has great fish, great prices and is very quick to respond to people.

Jordan is the only vendor I'll ever deal with for fish. His customer service is unbeatable, and is price point is great too.

Sorry to say to every one but not many or non of these fish are "rare", expensive but not rare. They may be hard to get your hands on in the pet trade or are just so dam expensive. Just an example "Conspicuous Angel" are not a rare fish in Australia, even down south in oz you are likely to see at least one in the summer months, and these fish are even more common in lord Howe island. not quite sure why they have a $3000 price tag but they are not rare. same goes with gem tangs, clarions and others, except these have reasons to be at the price they are at. Not trying to be rude but maybe the tittle should say "rare in the aquarium trade".

Hardly new news. Supply and demand in the trade will dictate pricing, whether a fish is actually rare in the wild or not. Buddy of mine goes to Mauritius every few years and claims that the polyzona tang is not all that rare there; yet it is expensive in the trade due to supply chain challenges. I keep asking him to bring one back for me  (he's going in the Fall, though claims he's going to look for MH370 parts ....)

Yes, that was the point of this clarification:

Rare in the aquarium trade is all that matters to us that keep fish... Doesn't matter what kind of rare. Clipperton angelfish are not rare at all but you don't see any in tanks because of the distance one has to travel and permits required to get one. Clarions are rarely collected anymore and you stand a much better chance of getting a CB one from Wen than getting one wild caught (especially a Juv) plus they are more hardy and command a higher price. Bandits aren't rare either but due to the depth they live at it makes collection difficult and CB Bandits are more than their WC counterparts at the same size. There are many deep water Hawaiian fish that aren't rare numbers wise but are collection wise.

Will never be able to get one but this is the nicest fish I have ever seen.

Turns out there is actually a Tigerpyge on DD currently. Unfortunately it's a rather drab specimen.

Exactly.:bounce3::bounce2:

Some fish are not even rarely caught (you find plenty of them at local fish markets), but getting them to the surface alive is difficult and tedious at best.
