Zebra Tang - Acanthurus polyzona

Hello guys

Now are three polyzona in display tank. I bought an adult one and after a few weeks with maximum food he move to dt. No problems with the two juvenile. The polyzona are crazy fish. Never had so much problems with aggressions with my angels. I ordered two Zebrasoma rostratum that arrive next Wednesday. I will be very carefully to introduce them in dt. First I will separate them and feed up. Then I will introduce the small one in dt. After a few weeks the bigger one should follow. Never make this mistakes with polyzona with other surgeonfish again.

In past I had hepatus and achilles but never see such a killer. When fish is feed up fat and healthy will survive the first days.

Also my second Chaetodontoplus conspicillatus and two Centropyge collini in small tank now. Hope everything get well.

Wow, so they are ultra aggressive? This is good to know, not sure I'm so dead set on one now... Considering your tank is over twice the size of mine, not sure it's worth the risk. Thanks for the update, seems like you may have just saved me from a $1,000 mistake

when I can turn time back I would never buy this fish again.

Also a problem would be to introduce Paracentropyge multifaciata. My trio have no big problems with the polyzona but by Nori station the polyzona expel the multibar only so I think introducing this angels could be a problem.

But also I think that is possible that only the small juvenile polyzona could be so high aggressive. The adult one doesn't recognize the small ones. Let's see what happens when the small ones get adult.

Hopefully the polyzona will calm down and allow the multifaciatas eat. Really like this fish... So the adult doesn't bother the other fish? What size is the adult?
 
Yes adult one doesn't bother the other fish. The small ones chase each other. The smallest also the bit bigger. But now they doesn't hurt each other. The first three days the new introduced smallest get hurt extremely. The hole body was damaged. But a week later looks great. But the small was fat and healthy and a few months fed up in small tank.

The big one is more than 12cm. Everywhere writing maximum 12 cm.

The adult was in small tank together with small morish idol an Chaetodon rainfordi. The polyzona doesn't like the rainfordi but doesn't chase him and doesn't hurt him. Just treated the rainfordi.

Sorry to hear about your troubles with them. On a more positive note, nice collection of fish!! And another conspic in QT! Awesome. Is it as large as the on in the DT?

My small 2" polyzona is giving me the same aggression issues. It killed a 4-5" achilles-goldrim hybrid that was introduced into the tank 2 weeks before I released it in. In my previous research about this fish I always thought they were supposed to be gentle and docile.
 
Thanks, yes it is as large. I wait more than one year to pick up an conspicillatus. This are the first ones since I wait by wholesaler. In Europe experience fish were sold rarely. My wholesaler has two Genicanthus personatus since months and doesn't sold them. Price : 20.000 Euro

Bad Cyanos in moment and conspicillatus and collini in small tank. Tomorrow arrive four Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis one male and 3 female and four Cirrhilabrus lineatus 1 + 3 also. Let me see next days. My youtube account offers videos of the hole tank. End of June the hole interior will change. New Rockwork, new Dreambox with Vliesfilter and running bay from the middle to one short side that will closed then. I will start a buildthread after this (I hope ;) )

When polyzona is established in tank no problems with ich. In this moment I have a little ich problem but polyzona no dots on fins. Polyzona seems very robust. Long time established hepatus has several dots

All polyzona together in one 250 gallons quarantine tank. All well no more aggressions between now. Very robust against ich. No visible dots. No scratching on rocks. Hepatus was full of dots.

I think the polyzona that killed is because I make mistakes. My recommendation for introducing several polyzona quarantine lonely without other polyzona. If they are fat and health introduce together in displaytank. They will fight each other three days extremely with using their scalpel but their robust enough to survive. After that a easy fish. No aggressions against other fish that introduced. But if I am honestly for that price I would prefer triostegus. But they get much bigger.

Thanks for the update Torben, it seems they are about the rarest tang on earth... haven't been able to get one since before you were able to get your 3 or 4 early this year. There are only two collectors in Mauritius and it seems that only one catches Polyzonas and it seems that only happens once a year.

Dejong just have a big one. The last one I didn't buy ;)

Funny that the rarest tangs in one area. But the gemmatum ist more expensive in Europe. I told here before that Dejong listed polyzona for I think 125 EUR. After I read an american article of this fish (I think reef b*ilders) that this fish is about 1200 USD I ordered 7 polyzona. After a few days Dejong called me an told me the new price. So I reduce to 3 polyzona ;)

Funny how that works isn't it? Just last year they were 7-800 USD now they are 1300 (1100 when on sale)
