Commonly referred to as one of the species most commonly available in the aquarium trade. Z. sociatus is commonly described as forming large colonies of polyps connected at their bases by a very thin coenenchyme. They are so loosely connected that individual polyps or clumps of polyps readily break off of a colony if tugged. The coloration is variable but is generally shades of green or blue-green, often with a yellowish oral cone.

Working on a new write up, but need some pictures of polyps that are confirmed Z. sociatus. I would prefer some that are commonly available and/or named corals if anybody has any. Thanks in advance.

I believe I have those very zoas. Your description describes mine perfectly. I'm currently at a lights out period, and my zoas haven't liked something in the tank recently, so the extension is not the best, but mine have a brown body with thin links to neighboring polyps. The skirts are green striped, with the yellowish oral cone. If I can get a good pic, I'll get one tomorrow. I can't see how to confirm the exact species. But I'll get a pic.

Thank you Aaron, that would be awesome.

I think I have some. They are named "green bay packers" zoas.

Mallorie, I've wondered about both those and RDE, I was kind of hoping somebody could positively confirm this.

These?

I think they're Green Bay Packers, so I've been calling them when anyone asks.I bought a single polyp or two from the el cheapo rack for something like $5 way back when and they were nameless. They just look like them to me. They're not the fastest growers, so if that fits your polyp, these may be what you're looking for

Zoanthus sociatus

Hope this helps. :reading: :fun2:

Hehe, I couldn't resist...

Thanks - been there and done that ;). Lots of pictures in the wild, but I'm looking for pictures of these in someone's tank, not ones that are wild. Especially if any of the "named" varieties are known to be Z. sociatus. Unfortunately, so far no dice :(

flicker link I'll have to check from home, can't access it at work.
