10' Pond Build

Thanks for taking a look at my thread, and for the compliments! Still need to take a few pictures of the monos. So far, they have been sticking close to the high flow area, so it's tough to get a clear shot. I'm sure that they'll be a lot more active once they get settled in.

Time to get some underwater cameras for live feeds. Should put one in the atoll area with in rock work and on the rear side of the island to see what goes on back there.

Have been thinking about doing something like this actually. Going to be upgrading our living room TV to a 4k screen within the next year, and was planning to put the old one on a basement wall. I'm not a tech guy by any means, but I'm sure there is a way to do some sort of underwater camera that feeds to it.

Um...probably the coolest idea ever!

Would definitely satisfy the more traditional aquarium view.

That.....is an awesome idea. Always talk about a pond once we move again. I got into this hobby originally to keep sharks, and got side tracked along the way. Definantly some good notes here for future use!

Yep. Island atoll is perfect. A high def surveillance camera hooked to the tv would be sweet. It wouldn't take much to make it water proof as many are already water resistant and only the dome would need to be submerged.

Ever considered a Halichoeres cyanocephalus, aka caribbean lighting wrasse? DD has a small juvi but with their adult size at a foot - might be a good candidate for the pond. Though I admit I have no knowledge of it's husbandry. Striking colors though.

Great suggestion! I like both the juvenile and adult phases of this species, and I think it would add a good amount of color/movement to the pool. Just need to wait until I have a little free space in QT.

A couple quick updates...

Removed the palm and bougainvillea from the island, and added a dozen more mangrove propagules. I thought the plants were a bit much, and went for a simpler look with only the mangroves. Excited for them to start growing in!

I also stopped procrastinating on the skimmer upgrade, and ordered a Super Reef Octopus SRO-6000 12" skimmer. I could have gone bigger, but wanted something that I could use (easily fit) on/into another system. I still plan to attempt building my own skimmer for the pool, but don't know when I'll be able to get around to it. This should work for the time being...

I would have built this in the living room instead of the basement. It's too cool for the basement.

But it has the possiblilty to crash through the floor, if the living room was not on the lower level/basement. 1200-1500 gallons is a LOT. lol

Really nice new aquascape! Very glad to see some sharks in there... I had been hoping you would get bit by the shark-bug.
Glad to hear they were captive bred.

As they get bigger, you will want to beef up on your protein skimmer. The sharks make huge "waste" and it mostly settles on the substrate. Some added flow down low will help keep it in the water column and able to be filtered out.
Continued success !!

Really loving the sharks! TBH, I was pretty intimidated to attempt keeping them at first because of the specialized care they require. Didn't want to try to place a shark in a system that was more suited to bony fish, but I think it's been working out well so far. Am amazed at how different each one is behaviorally. One of the males is out and about swimming most of the time, while the female and smaller male are more reclusive. When I have to get into the pool for 'scaping/maintenance, the bigger male has no fear of me at all, and swims right up to see if I may have (or may be) something edible. I added some lengths of 4" pvc pipe to give them more options to feel secure, which they have been using. I tried feeding Mazuri shark/ray gel on several occasions, but none of them were remotely interested. Have you had any luck feeding this stuff to your sharks? It's not at all difficult to add Mazuri's shark tabs to the food though, and not nearly as messy as making shark-jello. I just have to feed the first few bits with the tabs on a feeding stick to make sure each shark gets the supplement.

Good call on adding a bit more flow to the bottom of the pool. I'm thinking that I can just extend one of the return pipes a foot or so to get the flow nearer the bottom, but other ideas would be most welcome. I'd like to avoid adding additional pumps/electrical equipment to the pool it's self if possible.

Just a few more updates...

Am trying to come up with something to put on the outside of the pool to make it look a little better. One idea that I had is to build some framework from trex decking, and use something like I did in our dining room ceiling as sort of a wainscoting. I probably wouldn't use the square pattern (fleur de lis maybe?), and can frame it in with baseboard moulding so it looks finished. I'm kinda going for an antique industrial look to the basement, so I think this would fit in well. My other ideas are to frame in a white "wavy" wainscoting, or maybe some type of reclaimed brick. Any thoughts? This is a pic of the ceiling that I put in so you have a better idea of what I'm talking about.

New skimmer came today. Have it all assembled, and just need to place it in the sump and plug it in. Going to wait to hook up the drain line until I get it dialed in to the right consistency of skimmate. I will likely need to go bigger with the skimmer eventually, but this is a definite improvement on the little AquaC remora that I'm currently running, which I do have to say has done a fair job to this point!

Seems like every time I post a pic of the pool, I had just done something to cloud up the water. In this case, I added another 75 lbs of sand to the refugium. Anyway, I thought I'd post a recent pic of my Naso unicornis. They are just now starting to grow their horns. I also recently added a couple Hawaiian Naso lituratus. No aggression from the unicorns at all!

So this little regal tang... Really can't tell by the pic, but his head is actually a vibrant purple color. You can kinda tell there is a little difference in coloration between the head and the rest of the body, but my phone camera really doesn't pick up the true colors. I loaned my real camera to my brother a few months back when he and his wife had their first daughter. He gets a lot of use out of it, so I think I'll just let him keep it and pick up another one for myself.
