10' Pond Build

Do you still have the triggers?

Yea, still have all of the triggers! Here's a very grainy pic of the Assasi trig with a couple of the nigers. The golden heart trig is still very shy so it's tough to get a clear pic of him. Great fish though, and has been extremely easy going thus far. Assasi is now a little over 4", the 5 small nigers are around 3", and the big one is starting to approach the 1' mark.

I am sooooo freaking jealous. I mean, i want to move in. Seriously. That is awesome. And here I was excited about the idea of doing a 300 gallon look down tank. Now it would only be a shadow compared to this. WANT SO BAD!!!!!
I keep telling myself to win the lottery, it's the only way it will every happen. Ah well, at least I can live vicariously through your photos. :)

My original idea was actually to do a 300 stock tank. I decided to go with the pool because I was unsure if it would fit down my basement steps (my house was built in the '50s, and the staircase to the basement is on the narrow side). Turns out that I could fit it down there after all, and now use a 300 gallon rubbermaid as a time-out/emergency tank.

If you have the opportunity to do a top down tank, you will not be sorry! IMO, the top down perspective adds a level of interaction that you just don't get from a standard tank. There are some trade offs though, such as losing some viewing clarity (especially if you have a large, very active niger trigger constantly splashing around, begging for food at the surface). Looking forward to seeing some pics if you decide to set one up!

Haven't updated this thread in a while.

I added a new fish a couple weeks ago (first one in some time). This 8" tang was a return at my LFS, and it was pretty obvious that he'd been in captivity for some time. When I placed him into the pool after QT, he would swim no more than 3' at a time before making a sharp turn at a right angle. This was repeated over and over for the first 3 days before finally adjusting to being in a larger space. Obviously he was very conditioned to being in a glass aquarium!

Here's a pic from the acclimation bucket. A little HLLE, but that should clear up soon enough. Other than that, he looks to be in good shape (spots that appear to be on the fish in the pic are actually on the water's surface).

Added a few mangroves as well. Going on the advice of RC members on the macro forum, I'm going to thin this grouping out and do a few smaller pots along side of the main planter. I think a mangrove "island chain" would be a cool touch.

...And a pic from today of my mixed angel pair. They have been inseparable for a year and a half now. After looking at some older pics, It's obvious that these guys have both grown considerably in that time. Something that I never really notice seeing them every day.

Oh man, always love seeing updates on this tank! That's crazy about the tang, would be funny to see. I bet it loves all the extra room.

That Annularis is awesome! One of my favorite fish you don't see very often.

I agree... definitely in my planned stock list.

Just when I think my tank is starting to look really good, I see something like this and feel like my tank is not very cool at all. :0)

This thing is incredible!!!! I would give up corals in a heartbeat to do something like this.

Any Updates? Been following this for years and love the updates on how it's doing? Ever thought of adding a puffer?

Apologies for the lack of updates lately.

Lots of changes over the past few months actually... including a few puffer additions!

I decided to move the sharks into their own dedicated systems. I'm still in the design process of how I want to go about setting these up. In the mean time, they are in 2 102" X 67" X 24" (approx 600 gallons each) pools. Thought the horn sharks would benefit from cooler water, and I figured while I was at it, I would move the bamboos to their own system as well. Has been working out much better when it comes to feeding. The tangs got to the point where they would grab anything that hits the water, making stick feeding the sharks a bit of a challenge. I'll post some pics as I get their new permanent homes up and running. 2 rectangular pools with various lengths of PVC pipe isn't the most visually appealing thing ever. Had to add an additional dehumidifier too FWIW.

I've been wanting to build a Rum bar for a while now, and have been working on that when I have some extra time. I have the backing and some shelving up along the short wall of the basement (still need to paint/stain the wood, and work on the "bricks" a little more, but it's coming along. Please excuse the mess

I may attempt to incorporate the sharks' tank into the actual bar which will be in front of the shelving, but again, still not sure... Don't want to do anything that might be stressful for them.

Also had the idea to do a watercolor painting (fish portrait?) of each of the fish in the pool. I have a lot of empty wall space on the wall opposite the pool, and thought that would be a good way to fill it up.

2 down... lots more to go...

As for the pool... After removing the sharks, I was able to add some fish that I wasn't able to before, including a few triggers that I've had since they were small juveniles. Took a few weeks, but they seem to be adapting well to the extra space. I do have other housing options for them at the ready should they not mix well with the other fish.

Moved my broomtail wrasse over as well. Wasn't sure how she'd get along with the tripletail, but they barely notice one another.

I've had these two porcupine puffers together for the better part of a year. They really seem to be enjoying the extra space. They almost always stick together and will follow each other around the pool. One interesting thing that I've noticed about them, is that they will rapidly change color/pattern as if they are communicating. Hasn't been any aggression between the two of them, but then again they are still young (7" or so). Also grabbed an Arothron hispidus from DD. He was the one that posted a few months ago with the mouth deformity and was missing all of his teeth. He's still in QT, but is eating great, and should be ready for the pool shortly. My wife thinks he looks a lot like the character Sid the Sloth from the Ice Age movies, so he's already joined the ranks of the small number of fish that actually have names! She's actually the one who decided that a toothless puffer was a must have for the pool.

...and a few more random pics...

On another note, I dusted off my old TV and moved it to the basement. Just need to mount it near the pool and figure out how to rig up an underwater video camera. Thought it would be cool to have a different perspective of the fish.

What an epic room, thanks for the updates. I'd love to do this one day, keep up the good work.
