100 gallon build

Looking good! Ooooooh yeah, you should look into external overflows, that would be awesome! More swimming and aquascaping room, plus they look so sleek and clean! Just my opinion though. =P

Ricky says we are in fact going to drill the tank to do internal overflow. Dont we need to have a internal overflow box surrounding the tubes?

because of the front to back depth of the tank already and space i have to work with i will drill the bottom of the tank.the o.f. box i want to put in the center back of tank.i do like the look of it there and rockwork will cover for the most part.the few questions i have are about the overflow and plumbing.

1.size of overflow?i know i want room for my hands and 2 1 inch drains and the plumbing for the 3/4 return.so far i have drawn out on plywood at 16in across the back with 45's to the front and the front will be 6 1/2.by the looks of it ill have room to put a hand in with the plumbing installed.i would like to build the o.f. out of solid piece of black acrylic heated to make the 45's.so if anyone has a piece about 2ft by 2ft for sale pm me.

2.the plumbing? i now know that 1 inch overflow x2 and 3/4 ruturn should be more than enough, but i want to use hose instead of pvc.without being able to hold in hand and fit pieces i need making a list to order seems impossible because i dont know what size fittings to use to connect parts together.ive compiled a list of parts like bulkheads ballvavles, check valves and hose and im stuck on connecting them.if anyone has an assembly of parts i may be looking for pm me and let me know what you want.

3.pump and skimmer?dont want dramatic flow but have read to match as close as possible the two flow rates.the 2 pumps im looking at are the ehiem 1250 and 1260.3x to 6x turnovers and still looking for skimmer gph info.

we are steady reading and comparing what we each find but info on where to read or look for info is always a big help.hopefully i am able to start the stand next weekend and get the rock cycling in a spare 75 i have which leads to another question.will a couple of hob's be sufficient in cycling the rock?

No filtration needed to cycle rock. scrub rock if it has anything on it you don't want in your tank and into tank with heater and power heads to circulate water. Do water changes every couple of weeks. When you pick up a piece of rock and smell it you don't want to smell death/stench. You want it to smell like your tank. If you have your skimmer or someone has a spare, you can certainly skim the water.

are you planning on using a gurgle buster or Durso stand pipe in your overflow? I use durso's, but the gurgle busters are easier. either way you want your returns bigger than the bulkhead. example 1" bulkhead use an adapter and run 1 1/4 pipe it will help your flow also I slip fit my pluming inside the overflow incase I need to remove due to a fish getting in or cleaning etc. just my 2 cents

Regal plastics sells scrap pieces from over-runs cheap...they have a whole bin full and sell it by the pound...and if you've bought from them before...they should make you an even better deal, just ask at the desk about their scraps.................

We are using the Reef Saver Rock from BRS

JMO. This dry rock is the same price per lb as the live Fiji rock on the comas group buy on the comas forum. If I had a choice between live or dry, I would go with live. Just trying to help. I'm buying half a box myself.

gws76 we had already purchased our rock when the fiji rock came available. Love the quality of this reef saver rock and believe it is going to be georgous when established

just finished some research on durso and gurgle buster.they both seem to have the same amount of pro's and con's so............i'll just have to try both out and see what works for me,lol.thanks cjilge something i hadnt put much thought into yet and i can work on these on downtime.ill post pics of them as i build them.if there are other things that would be great downtime items let me know.
