125g AGA!!! YIPPEE Getting my PUFFER!

I would go for a bigger box with a smaller return pump. That way if you ever decide that you want more flow then all it will take is a pump upgrade. I think a couple 1" - 1.5" drain will do just fine

I talked to Salty Critter today, they do not drill tanks anymore, but would gladly loan out their hole saws for a deposit... I am going to pick them up tomorrow, anybody need anything?? Within reason?

Dan also recommended a two inch overflow hole, and a 3/4"-1" return. I think I am getting there! Should I hard plumb this, or use flexible hosing?

Very nice Marie!

Thanks! I am very excited to get it going. I will just cry if I mess up drilling this thing!!! I have a couple 10g i can play with...figure that glass is alot thinner, so if I can do that, I should be able to do this!!

What if the operator of the drill gets in a bind while drilling???:)

I am scared, but I really think i can do this...there are a million threds out there of people that have done this, a hundred times!!!

I have to get ready for work, will try to post some pics of my new endeavor!~

Marie, make sure you find out if the bit can be run dry or if it needs to be wet... big difference:cool:

Thanks for all the info everyone! I have a new problem!! :D

They never end do they?? I took all my rock out of the boxes, and it is still moist, some of it has mold growing on it....

I cannot belive what I found either, pieces of leather coral, some type of zoas, dried up mushrooms, some zenia, I think....all just thrown into a trash bag and put in a box!

What was this guy thinking? I don't have any idea how long it's been boxed up, I am gpoing to have abig cycle with this stuff, ain't I? Is there anyway at all possible that the live stuff might come back, or has it probably been too long?? I seen purple, green, orange, and pink coraline too...unbeliveable....Why didn't he sell it alive?

Think I will get a couple more rubbermaid containers tomorrow, there's got to be on the + side of 200lbs here... I will never use that much in my tank either, unless I want to see the fish manuever around an obstacle course!

Goind to bed, wil let you know how thing's turn out!~

The pile, my kitchen table is a 4' X 6' oval, almost all of it is taken up, and this stuff is stacked!~

This is a huge rock that has dead corals on it...looks like little pruple colored polyps that have closed/dried up....poor little guys...

Dang Marie, you better scrub that stuff to get as much off as you can before you try to cycle it. That cycle is going to be huge and smelly.... maybe you ought to think about "cooking" (not with a stove) it for a couple months if you have a place and some tubs to do it with. That would give you time to get things planned and set up.

Looks like it was nice stuff too.

Good morning....

That's what I was thinking too...maybe all this nice base rock is going to cost me even more time!! I am guessing if he hadn't put it in garbage bags, it would've just dried out, but this stuff is still moist, and growing mold....is it salvageable?

I hate to throw it away.....I have it setting on the kitchen table now, was wondering if any of that pretty corraline could come back, or if it will just turn white and fall off....

What about bleaching, I have read a couple posts about it, would it hurt my fish???

They say to bleach it for a few weeks, then rinse, and soak in fresh SW for a few more weeks, ever heard of it?

Another stumbling block to an awesome tank!!

I wouldn't be thrilled about the bleach for rocks.... Tanks and eqipment yes. Cooking involves moving the rock from one tub to another with cleaner (sea) water over a period of weeks, gotta keep it in the dark and with some water movement during that time. The entrie process can take months but apparently you end up with some top notch rock bacteria-wise. Keep in mind my description is way simplified.

I think you can save it but it will be a process.

Damn, I was just hoping to throw this in the tank with some LR, and let it cycle....is this feasible if I go barebottom, and keep the circulation up good?

May do this now, and keep the water level below my new holes (they aren't done yet) til I get everything plumbed

Looks like it's going to be a lot longer process than expected!

Patience is the key......too bad I don't have any!:D

Ok, so i need to put this in some Rubbermaid containers with heater and powerhead, correct?

DO I just swap them out every few days, weeks, how do I know when it's done, just check params like a normal cycle?

When I put this in the tank with LR, will it cycle all over again? I was going to use some LR form Salty critter, and seed this stuff...

I just don't want to handle it twice if I don't have to, if this can be done in the tank.....

any ideas?

If there is alot of chunkies in that rock it will just end up in your tank-- I'd cure it in some rubbermaid containers a few weeks with a bunch of circulation and alternate it (the circulation) ocassionally--- better make it air tight as you might get a big stink out of it... maybe move it to your tank if you stop getting chunkies out of it and let it finish in there...

Be sure to stock up on some air freshener

Is it necessary for it to be in the dark? I have three good size containers, but they are the "clear" type plastic....

I will try to get some others today if these won't work, otherwise, into the rubbermaid containers it goes!!

Is it necessary to use a heater at this point? I am not trying to "save" anything....

It would be preferable for it to be dark. The dissolved organics that come out of that rock is going to be ripe for a huge algae bloom and thats what happens when you have light + lots of dissolved organics.

Yes, cooking should be in the dark. Once you are done, if you move it immediately to your tank, you should not re-cycle. The die off causes the cycle.

Oh, yes, me understand perfectly what happens!! Just got done scrubbing all the rock in my cube!!!

I will put it in the clear containers, and place it in my spare bathroom, and shut the door! No need to purchase new totes... there's no windows, so no light!

Thanks everyone for your help.
Going to get ready for work.

Have a great day!
