225g BB Reef Project!!!

Hey Everyone,
I am currently in the process of putting a 225g (84"x26"x24") Reef tank together. The tank will have a starfire front panel and bare bottom. It will sit on a 2"x2" tubular steel stand.

Circulation: Will be provide by Pan World 200PS (1750 gph), Sequence 1000 (4300 gph) close loop

Filteration: 45g sump, 37" Tall - 8" dia Geo Reef Needle Wheel Skimmer, etc...

Supplements: Korallin 1502 Calcium Reactor, ReefMania Kalk Reactor, Phosban Reactor

Lighting: 3 x 250w DE Setup, 7' T5 blue supplements.

Here is my GeoReef Needle Wheel Protein Skimmer. It is 37" tall, 8" dia and runs off of 2 x Sedra 9000 recirulating pumps!!! I hope it is enough for my tank.. I got a great deal on it from a reefer in Ohio.

Well.. I broke down the 75g and sold it last week. I really didn't want to take care of 2 tanks.. :D

Here are some pics of the tank after me and 5 of my reef club friends moved the tank in.

And I thought the stand for my 375 was overbuilt using 1.5" tube! That thing is a beast and should hold 4 tanks that size- you used tons of bracing!. I noticed you also put cross braces in the bottom section of the stand as well- What was your reasoning for that? I didn't see a reason for cross braces on the bottom of my stand but am curious of why you did- maybe a wood floor or a basement underneath and it provides more even load distribution? Mine sits on 6" concrete so I wasn't too worried about that.

Looks like you powdercoated your stand as well- good choice. Looks to be an awesome project and keep the pics coming.

Yeah.. I decide to just over engineer the stand. I wanted the stand to hold up to anything.

The braces where suppose to be smaller ,but there was extra
steel left over and the guy building the stand just decided to use it all. But now when I look back, I would of put less bracing, because they sometimes get in the way of plumbing.

Actually my tank sits on a 4" or 6" stab also.

Yep.. got the stand powder coated. I didn't want to deal with the stand rusting.

Wow - you could park a house on that stand. Nice. Mine is also 2 inch x 2 inch steel - what guage did you go with? Mine is 1/8th inch.

I like that you aren't going crazy with sump flow/turnover (looks like about 8ish times/hour). Plenty to feed your ginormous skimmer.

What size and how many holes do you have in your overflow? How big are your closed loop intake/return? I hope you'll go with schedule 80 bulkheads!

That is a beautiful tank as well. Congrats!

The stand is made of 1/8" thick steel also.. Little cheaper than 1/4" and I really didn't need it. :D

Well the return pump is an PanWorld 200PS.. (1750 gph with a max head of 39'). The pump feeds the skimmer and 2 x penductors. So I am pushing about 1000 gph thru my penductors and with the head pressure the pumps creates. The penductors turn the 1000gph into 5000gph (just with the return pump I am getting about 23x turn over.) :D But only 1000gph goes thru the sump.. No loud splashing noise.

Actually using SCH 40 bulkheads, because AFY didn't have slightly larger diamond hole saws for the SCH bulkheads. :(


The overflows have 1.5" drains and 1" returns..

The close loop pump is fed by 2" bulkhead and goes to 2 x 1.5" bulkheads in the back.

Looks great! Do you think the Korallin 1502 will be enough to keep up with the demands of a 225 (assuming you are going SPS?)? I am running one on our 180 and had to add a PM secondary reaction chamber to help maintain 400+ calc.

Well I am also using a Kalk Reactor on my top off system. And I am planning on making a DIY second chamber..
