Beautiful colours. Can we have a fish stock list?
This list will be changing soon as I plan on moving out alot of the smaller fish and adding a few larger ones.
As of now I have:

Pair of Watanabe Angels
small Flame Angel
small Potter's Angel
Pair of black percs
Trio of orange percs
2 small yellow tangs
12 chromis
3 small ruby fairy wrasses
1 yellow fin pink fairy wrasse
1 male flame wrasse
1 exquisite wrasse
1 purple psuedochromis

I'm considering adding a nice imperator angel, a red sea regal angel, a male bimaculatus anthia, a male lyretail anthia, and a pair or trio of black tangs within the next few months. I'll move out the chromis, ruby fairy wrasses, one of the yellow tangs, and maybe the Potter's angel if I decide to add these bigger fish. I don't want to be overstocked ;)

Wait until you see the 6'x6'x30"tall semi cube I've got planned ;)

When can you expect to see the "new" bigger cube?

cant wait to see what you do with that.

will it be inwall or free standing w/ 3 sided view like the current cube you have setup now?

thanks

Nick

Which of those is the black and white stripe fish? I think red fish in a reef tank look great so you should keep those wrasses I reckon. Just add all the other fish and lose the potters and 6 chromis. :)

72x72x30 ?? You were looking at building a 96x48x24-30 or getting a used one ?? LOL you sound like me when I was tying to pick a size to go with until I ended up with my 600gal (96x48x30)...

The used 8x4x2 was not in good shape. It had tons of scratches and holes drilled in the sides for a closed loop. The LFS decided to keep it and has set it up at the store.
I've decided on a 6x6x30" as I love the semi cubes and this one will be quite 'different'. Don't get me wrong, an 8x4x2 would be sweet, but I might be able to get the 6x6 built without any eurobracing like my current 4x4.
It will be a while before it reaches fruition, but it will happen ;)

Hey there sonofgaladriel, I have been following your thread for a while I meant to ask you, I am building a 40x40x24-26" cube 1/2" glass and I wanted to use some of the Jacuzzi bulkheads that were to small for you, would you think they'll fit in my tank, it being 1/2" and all? well LMK, and great tank and keep up the good work, let us know when you get those black tangs.
Felix

Hi Felix,
I'm sure the jacuzzi bulkheads would work for you with your 1/2" glass thickness. Go to your local hot tub dealer and talk to their service guys. I'm sure they can help you our and maybe even let you borrow some to see if they will work.
Good luck with your tank and thanks for the compliments!
I'll definately post when/if I get my black tangs! That will be a happy day. I've been waiting over 3 years for one and they keep slipping through my fingers, but I've got a good feeling that some are comming my way soon.

Thanks sonofgaladriel, and i'll keep an eye out for your black tangs if you keep an eye out for a gem tang for me :)

Hi, not sure if this was mentioned way back in the posts, but I was curious on a few things.

Why did you choose acrylic over glass?

also

Why did you choose 3/4" over 1" acrylic or even 1/2" acrylic?

Thanks and great job!

Hola!
I chose acrylic over glass due to the number of holes I wanted drilled in this tank for the closed loop as well as the clarity issue.
I went with 1" acrylic so that I wouldn't need any top bracing or euro bracing. I wanted a completely clean top edge with unrestricted access and viewing.

Makes sense.

I am considering a tank for my living room but am concerned about how bright 1000watts of light overhead may be in an open tank.

Would it be fair to say that an open top such as yours sheds alot of light outside of the tank as well?

With my 2 Oceanlight pendants and the 2 250 watt DE bulbs being mostly directed straight downward for focused lighting, the 'overflow' of light is not too bad. In fact, my big screen is only 10 feet away and the light from the tank does not affect the viewing of the screen at all.
I can honestly not report any negative affects of having these fixtures over an open tank.
I have heard that the 'overflow' of light from SE bulbs is much greater as the reflectors that are used with them helps to encourage a wider spread of lighting that could be a detriment with a canopy less design.
Of course, how high you keep the lights, and the wattage, also plays a significant part in this as well.
One of my original considerations was a single 1000 watt bulb mounted directly center over the tank. That got pushed aside when I discovered how much heat that would put off and how high I would have had to keep the light over the water. Way too much extraneous light spread in that situation.

Good info, thanks.

One other thing if you don't mind, I owned an acrylic tank a few years back but I wasn't happy with clarity. I said to myself next time I would go back to glass which I never regretted.

Do you feel acrylic is clearer today than a few years back or do simply feel acrylic has always been clearer?
