47G SPS...Revamp

Sahin the Canon 70D shoots very nice video as well as stills. It's quite a good camera. I have the original Canon 100 macro and it's a sharp lens. Better build quality than the Tamron, metal vs. plastic and better autofocus.

You can set a custom white balance in the menus. Find a piece of rigid white plastic that's opaque. Put it into the tank, fill the frame and take a shot of it. Go to WB in the menu, choose Custom WB and select the image. Depending on where you take the image you may want to create a new custom white balance. Directly under a blue + will be different than under a different T5.

This is good info.. I'll give this a shot. I've never tried this method...

Sahin, I'm not sure we could spot a difference in picture quality between the L and non L unless we were in a lab testing the lenses.
I'll only get to try a video on the weekend..

Hello Rui,

Thank you for the compliment.

Regards the Apex, how have you set it up to send you notification when power goes off? Is it on backup power?

Hello Sahin,

You have several options ...
The simplest one to start is to register your APEX in Russ Reeftronics.
They will query your APEX every hour and if they cannot they will send you an alarm for your email.

The other option is to have a small UPS to power your router and APEX.

And finally the ultimate goal is to have the UPS powering the router, APEX and the outlet block.

You can configure it that in case of powerloss, power down everything except the return pump that you can dial down to 30% for instance!

Regarding the DÖS ... I really think you did good with the Kore!
I want one for myself also (when kalk is not enough anymore)

There are still some issues with DÖS or Fusion. Good for AWC but in my opinion not for dosing!

All the best,
Rui

P.S: BTW next week or the week after I will have to go to London. ;)

Thanks for the info. Just learnt from another thread that there is a bridge device to convert the Kore5th doser from BT to WIFI. Will be awesome if I can access when on holiday.

Please text me on Whatsapp to confirm date when you are coming over. I will make sure to keep my evening free and also setup my QT tank a few days in advance.

Sahin you run ATI not Pacific Sun yes?

Incorrect; I've been running Pacific Sun for many months now. Equivalent unit with 8xT5 and single LED cluster. As mentioned many pages back, I am testing it over my tank for my friend who is going to open a large coral farm in the UK. Another friend is testing Ecotech Radions over his tank. I shared many of my SPS with him and so far we found little difference in coral colours between the different lighting technologies when the reefkeeper is fairly accomplished with keeping SPS.
Its not a scientific test in any way, but it goes to show that a seasoned SPS keeper can generally pull off nice colours in the SPS regardless of lighting technology used.

We have noticed though, that some colours are just a little better under T5's; for example, the red/pinks look a little better under T5's compared to under pure LED's. We have compared our Red Planet over the past 1 year under my T5 (8xT5 and single LED cluster as supplemental both ATI and Pacific Sun), with his 100% LED's and my Red Planet definitely has more "pop" in the red colouration than on his Red Planet.

I really like the Radion and Hydra52 LED lights. My main issue with LED's would be coverage and spread of light. My corals exhibit better colour when viewed from the from due to the way T5's spread light.

Anyway, enough rambling for today.

I am very saddened by the shooting in Roseburg, Oregon. Being a parent I cannot even imagine how hard it must be for those who have lost loved ones. :(

Hello Sahin,

Been following your tank for awhile now and I sure have learned alot.
I have couple of Qs if you dont mind
- you are dosing Calcium and Alk with your new toy the kore but what about Mg?
- What made you choose the Funa marine color elements ? Have you seen any deffirence ?

Thanks

Hi,

Mg:
Mg currently I am not dosing. I am using Tropic Marin Salt and it is keeping the level maintained. If I notice it dropping I will just top up during the weekly water change.

With regard to Mg, I follow Ed (user Big E); no need to keep at a strict 1300ppm and chase numbers; keep it at the level your tank and maintenance regime is used to keeping it at (unless that level is terribly low etc). But usually levels 1200ppm+ is fine.

Fauna Marin:
I had the best colours in my acros a few years ago when I used the full Fauna Marin Balling system. The tank in its current form is reaching that level. Of course there are many variables, but I am simply replicating the same things when I had great colours; T5/LED hybrid/Fauna Marin/lots of fish/different foods every day etc were all part of that package.

As to Fauna Marin Colour Elements, currently not using, however will be including those in the next two months or so. Krzysztof Tryc doses these occasionally and they are a part of the package of his amazing success.

If I were using a Calcium reactor, I probably wouldnt be dosing the extra elements etc.

Once the snotty bacterial invasion of my cycling tank ends, I will start moving my frags over. It will be lit by 4 kessil 360's. I'm curious how the colors turn out using those. They use some true UV led's (in the 370nm range i believe) in their clusters. The red dragon frag I have was starting to color up nicely before I dipped it. I do have some pink zoa's and a solid pink blasto mertletti that are both showing great colors though. Pretty much the same colors they had under my old mh fixture running a phoenix bulb.

When is the new camera arriving. We need more pictures of your tank, just to make sure you aren't being sneaky and hiding any new additions.

Reason I asked is I was going to buy a Pac Sun Hybrid and the guys at Pac Sun said to look at your thread, however the pages he linked me to said you ran the ATI Hybrid, but I think i have decided i want to try and get away from T5 as I have 8x80w ATI at the moment and sick bulb changes and very poor service from Fast Light.
So I think i am going with 3 Radion Pros
I have a 3 tube 80w ballast in the garage I could always stick on if I thought I needed it

Yeah, I was running an ATI unit before, whoever gave you the link must have linked an old thread.

I've always ran either metal halides or T5. LEDs are fine IMO, but like I said above, the spread of light is the issue for me and its why I will always run T5's alongside LEDs or Metal Halide.

I do rate the Kessils. The spectrum is well thought out. However from my reading around and seeing them in person, the issue with having them on SPS tanks is shadowing. Once growth takes off, the shadowing can be severe.

The shadowing issue is actually worse on these than even the Radions. The light looks close to metal halides, but the spread is not as good. You will have to either place corals carefully from the outset, or add T5 to fill in shadows. Unless you are putting 4 over a tank with a small footprint.

My tank is pretty full with loads of frags and some colonies. If I add any new coral, it will have to be something rare or stuff I really want. Plus any new coral has to go through QT/dip/Interceptor etc...so anything new has to be worth the effort. :D

Picking up camera during the week. Hope to post a video of the corals. Photos are nice, but videos show movement of polyps etc. also since I won't have any macro lens quality won't be as good with a kit lens.

My new tank is 48 x 24 x 27. I figured one every 12 inches would cut down on the shadows. Everything going into the tank is tiny little frags, so it should be a while before I need to start worrying about shading. I really like the looks of the Kessils hanging over a tank though.

What Sahin is saying is that you need the Kessils spread not just along one line through the tank, but at least two rows of them, say 1/3 and 2/3rds of the way back. Otherwise, the front to back shading will be your issue.

Now Kessils down the center and T5s or LED bars in front and back, that will work and eliminate the shading. With Kessils, the more extreme your shimmer, the more likely you will have shading issues. When you get the density right the shimmer will be reduced but SPS will get the proper coverage. For that size tank I'd go with 6 if you want to have thriving SPS.

Can't wait for it buddy:beer::beer:

Hey hey, congrats on Reefer of the Month.

I thought a camera was required for this ... but then remembered Matt already won. ;)
