Achilles Tang Primer

i find that this is the best size. They are strong when larger.

I have to agree, Somewhat like naso tangs are stronger when larger. I tried a few small ones and they never did well at all. The larger ones seem to adapt better. JMO

Nice fiah there firebretha!

Heres the big guy.

Here he is next to a 2.5 to 3 inch coral beauty angel for size comparison.

You can see a little of the blue on his snout here, But its there. Kinda cool, I never seen this on an achilles before, But his is the biggest one i have seen in person.

Theres a short movie coming up soon. Just waiting to finish uploading.

Creetin - your achilles looks really strong and healthy. Great colors! Got to see your regal in the video too.

Firebretha - great colors! How long have you had him? What is he eating now?

Thanks, The regal is doing good too and fat. I have had him for 2 mos and he is eating pellets and flake very good. After he cleared all the small polyped zoanthus out.

They didnt know what to do since he basically dwarfs them. There was a little tail wagging at lights out for sleeping space. But all is good, No aggression.

Persistance, You need to feed them anything they will eat to get them going at first then it should come with time. They learn from the other fish. If not a little hunger session usually gives them a nudge. I would not go longer than a day. You want them eating good before the switch. IMO

divers den has a big 8 inch achilles for sale. Could I put that in a 375 gallon tank or is the tank to small?

375 would be great for it. Buy it before somebody with a small tank does.

My thoughts too. I have an 8 incher in my 300 and mine is happy swimming around the tank.

Update, Mine is just eating nori soaked in selcon and garlic at the moment. has alot of energy and not timid. Comes right up to me. Its still early but no ich on him. I would like him to start eating mysis next and then pellets. I suspect he is picking but i cannot say for sure.

I can't remember, was yours a DD specimen?

Throughout this thread there has been a debate about quarantining. I'm wondering if in my situation you guys would quarantine an achilles or not.

My lfs is ordering an achilles in for me and going to hold it at the store for a week to make sure it is healthy. My quarantine tank is a 55 gallon tank with a CPR Bak Pak skimmer, koralia 4, and an aquaclear powerhead which I used to use for coral propagation but not anymore. The tank has a 4 inch sand bed, 50 lbs of liverock and a ball of cheato. It isn't the standard quarantine tank which is completely sterile. It has a little algae growing that the tang could nibble on. If you were me, would you put an achilles into this tank before putting him in the display? I quarantined my powder blue in this tank and he was fine and fattened up before I moved him to the display.

I really want to quarantine the achilles because I want him fat and really healthy before having to duke it out with my other tangs in the dt.

problem is a 4 inch powder blue that I can't catch. Can they learn to get along? Achilles will be more than twice its size, but it is a very established powder blue.

If I had that setup I would probably use the QT. Is it a 4-foot 55-gallon tank? Also how big is the Achilles going to be? If it is 8" than this may not be a good idea.
