Achilles Tang Primer

Yeah, the 55 gallon tank is 4 feet long. I'm not sure how big the achilles will be until they get him in. If he is a big one I will just put him in the display.

problem is a 4 inch powder blue that I can't catch. Can they learn to get along? Achilles will be more than twice its size, but it is a very established powder blue.

Try printing out powder blue pics and taping them to the display in order to distract the powder blue from the achilles. Also definitley introduce him with the lights out for at least a day to keep him calm. If he is hanging out in only one area at first rubberband some nori around a piece of rubble and place it with some sort of garlic enticer and vitamins such as selcon in front of his hangout. Keep him eating and comfortable.

I think thats asking for trouble, I bet that powder blue goes ape when he notices the achilles. JMO
Good luck, I hope for the best for ya!!!!

I have to agreed with Creetin, it doesn't matter what size of your PBT is,
fact is that he has being established in your system. So even thought you Achilles
is 7" inches the PBT will still harass any new comers.
If I were you I would scoop out the PBT into your qt. then have your achilles
in the main display until is comfortable then add you PBT.

Here is a video of my achilles during feeding with pellets. Got him last sunday.

what about a sohal tang?

Here is a tank from Denmark with a Sohal and Achilles among other tangs.

Creetin, didn't you add your achillies with an established sohal? Is a powder blue more aggressive than a sohal?

Yes with an established sohal, orange shoulder and purple tang.
There are Very few but i magaged to find a mellow sohal. He is the king of the tank, and all the fish seem to respect that. Even the achilles seems to know that now. Theres never any scuffles though. He does get angry at the damsels that take pock shots at him when he swims by the nest but he will turn jet black and go nuts chasing the damsels. LOL I have had him around a year and i have not seen him get bad at all. I lucked out with this one my last sohal wanted to kill everything.

Well the achilles has some ich spots on him the last couple days, Seems to not affect the other fish. He is eating 3 times a day, But only nori soaked in selcon and hufa fatty acids and ammino's. He is starting to inspect pellets but is shy. I know i could get him on them if i starved a little but i dont like the idea with him and the ich. He grazes off the rocks all day and is not thin so i am not worried, Just will be patient, he will take to pellets eventually. All my fish seem to love them even the regal chows on them now after 2 mos.
I will try some live brine gutloaded with selcon today and see if that appeals to him. If i can find some live bloodworms i'll try that as well.

Live brine shrimp will consume the selcon, and when the fish eat the brine they will eat the selcon because they will have it in thier bellys.
I used to do this for my FW preds when i fed them live foods. Feed the live foods the healthiest foods and then the fish to my preds.

WOW today i added a healthy fat convict tang thats eating and full of life. I never see these come in and usually they look like death! Well it perked up the achilles and now he is roaming, grazing, and eating with authority. He does not like the convict! Luckaly the convict can stay out of his way in the nook he picked out. He kicked out a mean blue devil damsel. :) LOL Now the achilles is eating mysis and pellets today and alot more aggressively. He swam alot in the flow, But looked a little too mellow for my liking.
This changies everything, and i hope he keeps it up!!!

just love this fish. I always love to see these guys swimming around in people's tanks.

If you haven't seen it already, there's a great video of this reefer's huge cube tank (4' x 4') and a large achilles in it.

It's on reefvideos com. It's video, "Carl's 300g" system. He also kept his achilles in a 150g tank, too. You can see the video of his tank wth the achilles in the video, "Carl's 150g" system.

Enjoy!

ok, mine is being REALLLLLY weird.

he is going to the mandrin, and then flattening the mandrin. it doesnt seem like aggression he does with the watchman, its just strange... any ideas?

Sohal and clown tang. Intense!
Loving the fact that everyone's achilles are on the up and up. I'm getting prepped to add mine

Saw these videos a few weeks ago and the design of his tanks look amazing. Great use of space making caves and pass-throughs so the tangs have plenty of real estate for swimming. The Achilles in these videos is huge.
