Achilles Tang Primer

Thanks. It is a 300g DT, the total system volume is about 450g. I enjoy looking at many fish. But the downside is having tough time to keep the nitrate (40ppm) and phosphat (0.35ppm) down. I am running both piopellet, sulphur reactors and also just started dosing LC. On top of that I do about 10% water change every week.

Nice...wayne...what size tank is that? that is a lot of fishes...kind of like mine...lol...Do you have problems w/ nitrates or ammonia and how often do you do water changes and how much water?

My first Achilles

My first Achilles

Bought from local LFS 3/2/13. Did NOT QT (straight to DT) which led to ich.

DT went into hypo @ 3/19/13. At this writing still at hypo, and the tank seems to be doing well.

Question - do they ALWAYS seem hungry?! I swear I just fed her, and yet, one hour later, acts as if I never fed? Will eat from my hand, and will scoop up frozen as if she never ate! I feel like having to feed way more often than I used to.

No experience with AT and little with tangs in general (had a blue tang briefly before..) , but she ACTS like she has not eaten in forever (follows me across the tank, seems to be 'begging' for food all the time!) I understand they 'graze' (and so I keep nori in the tank..) but her behavior leads me to think I under-feed.

Tangs constantly graze in the wild and all I my tangs act like they haven't eaten even if I just fed the 5 mins before that. I'm convinced I could feed off my entire flat of mysis shrimp in one day to my tangs if I would keep feeding them

Dmorty -

Thanks for the reply. Agreed - at times I feel I can unload a jar of flakes and she'll keep eating (she loves Prime Reef flakes.)

Good to know its within normal tang behavior!

I think I will officially give up on keeping Achilles along with ich sensitive Tangs such as PBT's and Hippos. Just too frustrating and I'm not going to have my tank fallow for 6 - 8 weeks with the fish I already have in there. Wish all tangs were as disease resistant and bulletproof like my Blonde Naso and Orange Shoulder. Guess I'll only keep one in a copper run tank if I ever decide to keep one again. Props to all the successful reefers who've kept theirs alive and healthy in their systems withou ich and diseases.

So baffling and dissappointing seeing my Achilles and blue hippo as the only fish to show ich while every other fish looks just fine.

So are they coping with it or did u loose them. had the same problems...all my tangs are now immune to it. I think most peoples tank have ick and good husbandry manages it without any problems...

Sounds as it didnt end well since he is done with them. They are my favorite fish for the marine trade and hybrids there of, so I will adapt other livestock, tanks, equipment, conditions... Whatever I need to house one

I have taken the hippo into the hospital tank. The Achilles is still in the display. Eating like a pig and is probably the most active swimmer. I'll leave him in there for maybe a week or more and see if his ich condition gets worse. If so, I'll treat him in hospital tank and then sell them both.

Para guard dips will provide relief but won't cure the ich. Cupramine works well for ich, just make sure you don't mix ANYTHING with the cupramine like other meds or a water conditioner like a chlorine remover... It will cause the cupramine to be much more toxic

Good to hear that both are still alive. I can never get rid of ick so I just live w/ it. My DT have ick and tangs that get introducewill get it after 2 or so days but disappears and usually never come back. My archillis had a few spots on him when first introduced but after like 3 or 4 days...all went away and never came back. It has been about a month and not a single white spot on him and he is fat and healhty. All my 12 tangs have been through the similar expereince. I have 2 hippo and they got it the worst while in QT but have flawless skin now. I assume that yours will also become immune to it so be optimistic...good luck.

I have my Achilles in a 3 year old reef. It is a standard dimension 210 gallon tank with 300+ lbs of live rock and 40X water turnover rate. Tank is full of fish and is LPS dominated with a little bit of stony coral and a crocea clam. He has been in the tank for 10.5 months.

The first achilles I tried was given to me by the LFS. He was very, very skinny and sickly. He died in 2 days. I figured that would happen because he was so far gone, but the price was right. I didn't try a new one for almost 2 years.

I waited and searched for the right achilles. On Dec 4th of 2007 I brought home a beautiful 6-7 inch achilles from the Diver's Den. I picked him up in person because I didn't want to stress him out with shipping. I acclimated him for a hour or so and put him in the main display. Within a few days he developed some ich which didn't affect my other fish at all. I got him a pair of cleaner wrasses that had him spot free in a few days and I kept food in front of him all the time for the first few weeks. The ich went away and he has been fine ever since. DISCLAIMER___ I am in no way recommending that you should not QT your fish. I don't recommend you try this with your Achilles Tang.

He ate Seaweed selects within a couple of hours of introduction. He loves any type of algea sheets. He also eats all frozen meaty foods offered. He still doesn't eat flake or pellets. He was a bit slender when I got him but has since filled out beautifully.

His tankmates include 4 other tangs of which two are acanthurus sp. There is little aggression between him and the other fish although he is definitely king of the tank and occasionally chases the other fish. The others just stay out of his way. He has never hurt any other fish nor harrassed them to the point they were stressed out and wouldn't go out in the open at all. If he chases one into the rock he forgets about it and they reapear within moments.

My achilles tang can change his eye and skin color at will. To signal a cleaner shrimp, neon goby, or cleaner wrasse he turns both his skin and his eyes blue. When showing aggression to another fish (or his reflection) he changes only his eye color blue and flares his fins which turn a dark red orange color. I used to be able to make him change his eye color by turning off the room lights in the evening so he could see his reflection in the glass but he is now used to it and wont acknowledge his reflection any more. He will still change his eye color to warn another fish to get out of his way. He also change his eye color without changing his fins to red.

I have seen achilles with their eyes stuck blue in the store and I don't know for sure what this signifies, but after observing my fish I would see it as an indication of stress and pass that fish by in the store. I know mine doesn't do this when he is happily swimming around. For him it is a rare thing and not an indication that he is happy.

His tank mates are as follows -

1 Copper Band Butterfly
3 Ocellaris Clowns
2 Pink Skunk Clowns
4 Lyretail Anthias
1 Coral Beauty
1 African Flameback Angel
1 Potters Angel
1 Achilles Tang
1 Orange Shoulder Tang
1 Convict Tang
1 Regal Tang
1 Naso Tang
1 Midas Blenny
2 Chromis
1 Blue Throat Trigger
1 Whipfin Wrasse
1 Neon Goby

Here are a few pictures of my achilles. The first picture is normal coloration. The other show some of his other colorations; Blue for cleaners and blue eyes for "move it or I am gonna kick your butt."

Here is the day he was introduced and met my Naso.

Here is a picture of the achilles and his tankmates taken today. Since the picture above I have changed lights from 10K to 15K so the tank is a bit to blue now.

Amazing pics on the color changes!!! Still have the fish all these years later?
Great thread.

Finally took the plunge and sniped a 3 3/4" achilles from DD. he's in a 40g QT at the moment. Using an MP10 for flow and keeping it well aerated. He doesn't seem too keen on eating mysis at the moment, but did eat one piece that floated past his head. Seems to just swim with his head down at the bottom of the tank. It's only the first day, so hopefully he'll perk up soon. I'm going to also try and pick up some red gracilaria, see if he munches on that.

Very nice looking. Hope his ich gets better. Looks like an Achilles x Goldrim hybrid based on the yellow coloration.

it is a hybrid goldrim achilles. i posted a comparison pic on ur other thread.

did some research and found that

1) hybrid doesn't have teardrop
2) teardrop and tail color should be similar shade

correct me if im wrong

I've seen hybrids with teardrops. As with any hybrid, individuals can vary depending on genes. Goldrims don't have inner tail color, so I can see the tail matching achilles color, and the spot/rim matching the goldrim.
