Achilles Tang Primer

If you can get juvenile small specimen, It's still a risk because one day they will realize "this is my tank and what's this other AT doin here"
On a side note I never thought whether fish see color or shapes but my Achilles and pbt start dancing when the white led turn off and I just have blues on. They start swimming around the tank and doing the circling around each other dance. I am guessing it's because they don't adjust to light change as fast as humans and think they are the same species .

They don't do damage to each other generally and rarely do I see any scrapes .

Achilles and Powder blue definitely recognize each other as being a competitor. The "dance" is in order to find a spot to jab the opponent.

I did but hyposalinity ick resistant strain force me to sell all
Of them after I treat them with copper.
They are doing great on my friends tank.

I have no tangs in the display at the
Moment the lone fat Achilles is still on my qt tank.

Thanks! How long were they together? My plan is actually to introduce a small juvenile to the tank as one of the first fish, then add my large one after he's been established for a while. My reasoning behind this is based on skipping any dominance struggle with a dramatic size difference.

Ok but the only time this happens is when lights change and it happens every time they change. Never any other time. They swim together often during the day

I had 2 achilles in my tank for about a year. One died, then the other died about 2 months later. I guess it just wasnt an ideal environment for them to thrive in. I do not believe they died from disease. I QT all fish very rigorously.

Thanks for sharing! They look a little on the thin side in the video - do you think they weren't getting enough to eat? Or a space issue? Have you tried keeping one singly since? I'm really comfortable keeping achilles tangs in general, I think I may be overthinking this a bit. I've seen people do sohal x2, powder blue x2, etc, this probably isn't much different.

I've got my achilles in QT at the moment. He's got ick, so I just dosed Chloroquine phosphate. Hopefully it'll clear up fast, and should be a more gentle treatment than copper. He seems to be eating well. Takes nori and I feed him brine shrimp 5 times a day. He sometimes accepts mysis, but much prefers the brine.

Once he is disease free, I plan to introduce him to my 180g display at the same time as a PBT I have in the sump. Any tips on how to reduce aggression and have them get along? PBT is 4.5" and achilles is around 3"

I've had my achilles almost 2 years now, I probably overfeed him :-) I pretty much give him all the nori he can eat in addition to NLS pellets. He's grown about 2" both length and width in the last year ;-) I have absolutely no problems with him (knock on wood) and he's probably among the easiest fish i've ever had to maintain. We like fat fish in our house...LOL!

Three gorgeous fish! Very nice work.

angelfish, if you're talking about the achilles above it's my guy :-) He's a little over 6 1/2"...I got him when he was about 4 1/4" almost 2 years ago. He's a beast!!!!!

oh ok .. he looks awesome .. nice work. My AT is about 31/2" now.got him in August. Cant wait till he gets to that 6" range. I have a few large angels and hes holding his own .. just needs to compete for food with the angels and a large Naso.

You're fortunate, mine is the biggest a**hole in the world! LOL! The purple tang and clownfish we're already in there when I added him, but I won't be adding any more fish. He'll try to kill anything I put in there, doesn't matter how small or big they are. Mine grew a lot quicker then I was anticipating, we're already planning an upgrade from the 6ft to the 8ft for him. He will actually splash water out of the tank when my husband walks by...But I do love him :-)

Well most of my fish are almost double the size of the AT so i thinks thats why hes behaving right now. You should post a video of your AT.

Just picked up a 3 1/2 inch AT at my LFS for a great price. They had a bunch, but this one was the only one eating Mysis so home he/she came. I have recently begun putting new fish into QT with nitrofuracin green powder for the first couple of weeks, then cupramine, prazi, etc. Been a while since I kept an Achilles, any suggestions as to how to best manage the QT process with this fish?

Pictures seem to show your Achilles has a bit of ich, and I saw somewhere ales here on RC that you call it 'icky' How do you mange this - just feed it well and the ich goes away, or do you treat it?
