Am I alone or there are people who don't like GEM tang too?

I like Gem Tangs. They would move up the priority list if they were priced equivalent to Purples (or better yet, Yellows).

Beautiful fish, especially those which distinctly show the nice blue tint. I'm sure many may want them because of rarity and price for status.

There are simply too many other fish that can all be bought for $2K - $3K to nicely stock a large tank.

Whatever Derek!!! I won't tell them you used white out to paint spots on your purple tang!!!!

J/k Derek has a gorgeous gem tang.

Lol, thanks.

Sometimes my black starts to look like my gem...when a few ich spots show up. But a day later he's my shealth bomber again

I'd love to have one, tank too small, price too high for me. Price has nothing to do with it, I think they look awesome, the pictures I've seen at least. To each their own

I've seen quite a few gem's and the odd one looks nice but in general it isn't a fish i particularly care for. Don't get me wrong i can see why people would but i do think a lot of the appeal is the price and for every true fish collector there are many more who simply lust after it because of that price.
I also don't really get black tangs. Some look amazing and are beautiful when they are a jet black consistent hue but when the colours fade or become washed out with green/blue they lose any appeal they had. That isn't just me saying that as i can't afford one as i was offered one for free but whats the point in having a fish you wouldn't enjoy.

The one i truly don't get is tricolour tangs. Who want's a hideous mutant.

You mean to say this gorgeous supermodel black tang is ugly? [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

I agree. They're beautiful when jet black, ugly when old.

That's true. Many fish collectors won't admit but I bet ya more than 50% of their determination factor is caused by the price. Now let's say, bicolor angel fish is super rare and is worth 50000$. Many people will be praising it --- "if only I could afford that beauty." But now they'd tell you joculator wins bicolor 100x.

It's an obsession. It makes me feel sick actually that people would be paying that much to get some of the endangered species (not gem tang here but many animals and fish) caught in the wild and bring them into their tinny tanks just so they can "enjoy" them. What if peppermint is endangered? Well, I bet that will even further stimulate some folk's desire to get that fish.

Peppermint Angels aren't endangered, just extremely difficult to collect (they live at depths ~100M). Here's some footage off of Moorea in French Polynesia (at the 2:40 mark):

Yeah not my ideal fish but I do think it's great people like them and want them (still a supermodel compared to a tricolor). TBH there aren't many rare fish (I much prefer a scopas to gem or black) that do it for me but people who genuinely love them and aren't just showing off should be respected.

I agree. I like you people... well most :D... but there are somethings I have that I won't share with everyone else on the forum, just people who come to my house. I don't think its about showing off but rather tryng to share with people who enjoy the hobby as much as you do. PS I have Plenty of haters as it is, no need for me to try and get anymore!

Gotta love the haters!

Ah, Peppermint angels, one of those rare fish that would be drooled over no matter their price tag. What a beautiful little fish :inlove:

One of the biggest thing is people's aesthetics can change based on the price tag. In this money-driven world, if something is very expensive and rare, some people will look at it and think it's amazing but the same person may say "meh... just a fish" if the person looks at the same fish with a much lower price tag. I can try really hard to tell people OMG I love my bandit because it's really about the fish not the price tag but deep inside I doubt if my "love" for the bandit was really 100% because of it's color and personalities. How can you say a regal is not colorful? I believe more or less no rare fish collector completely just love her/his fish because of their colors and personalities. That's why they are called collectors. It applies to every type of them - doesn't matter fish, antiques, crystals... The rarity and the feeling of exceptional ownership drives the desire and changes the person's mind.

I truly consider the Bandit Angelfish to have the best personality (fish-onality?) of any angel. Other rarities are not all the same in that respect.
