I think half of a good skiboat or four nice 4 wheelers plus a trailer to haul them around with. Actually I stopped counting a few years ago. Some of the fish, corals and gear are from collecting over the past 10 years. With that said I purchased the tank, stand and most of the equipment at the same time a few years ago when the mortgage market was good. I remember spending around 6-7k for the tank alone, stand I was quoted 4k so I built it with a buddy for $400. Much of the gear for the tank I have built myself saving me big $$. If I were to purchase a similar set up from a local shop today my best guess would be between 35-45k?? Spread that over 30 years in the hobby and multiply it by countless hours of fun and excitement...final cost is priceless! :hmm5:

heckfire - You are close! I made it easy for water changes but it still requires lots of RO/DI water and salt!

I'm also using some Precision Marine reverse flow professional reactors for GAC/GFO on my current 100 gal. I also purchased some for my new 240 gal build. They are great reactors and built like tanks. PM is somewhat local for me and I've met Mike a few times. Super great guy and he will bend over backwards to help you. They custom built my 60x20x16 sump for my new build as well. Excellent craftsmanship and quality. If you contact them with what you need I'm sure they will help any way they can.
 
I have a friend with a pair of the 24" PM reactors and they are built really well.

I just got a Reef Octopus 140 for Bio Pellets, but am considering getting another one for GAC. Its a nice design and easy to use. Construction is not as heavy duty at the PM unit.

I also have a Deltec FR509 which I have been using for GAC. The Deltecs are great units but they are just not priced within reason of the other units on the market.

I also recently saw online the Bashsea and it seems like it might have some nice potential.

Dave - Thank you for your insight as well... Just took a look at the Bashsea stuff and that looks good as well.

I priced out the materials to make a large media reactor and after sending the lids out for CNC machining it would cost me about $200 each. Hmmm... I think I will save some time and purchase one already built.

Thanks guys...anyone using the new GEO reactor? The big ones look like they would work well too. They are $250 without me lifting a finger... :dance:

Are you training your fish to play basketball? Nice growth from a frag. Anything you feeding special overall or just natural?
 
Newbie Aquarist - I just had a large collection of fish in that tank...they ate a ton and in turn fed the corals a ton...

bullitr - How many fish do you have in your reef? How often do you feed? Mine seemed to grow fine with lots of fish and lots of food in the tank...
 
It's strange, I have a colt in my tank for the past year. It shrunk from it's original size about 70% in the first several months. For the past at least 6 months it has stayed the same size.

I have plenty of fish, and my xenia is doing well. And I am growing Lemnaila (sp?)

BigOldReef - I'm not really sure what the magic sauce was for that colt coral but it grew huge in that tank. It was mainly a large fish softie tank that I overfed often with only a few sps...
