UPDATE ON 500 gal SPS TANK

UPDATE ON 500 gal SPS TANK

I wanted to give an update with the ReefLux bulbs on my 500gal SPS tank. I have a combination of 10000K RL and 12000K RL on my system. The corals that are under that 10000K lamps are growing at a rate I have never seen before! I have been cutting the corals back and giving out frags to prevent the corals from growing into each other. I am really happy with the 10000K bulbs, but I have to say the 12000K RL are providing some of the most amazing colors I have seen in all the years I have been keeping SPS corals. The 12000K ReefLux produces a really crisp white color, but it has a visual blue hue to it. To me this is the most natural looking color I have seen in a lamp that closely resembles a coral reef in the wild! The other 14000K and 20000K lamps I have used just made all the corals look washed out and blue all over the tank. I have now decided to switch out the remaining 10000K bulbs and go with all 12000K RL. I will post pictures soon if anyone would like to see them.

I would love to see pics. I can't do the color of my 12k's justice when I take pictures. I have to agree with you, although I have never been scuba diving, just snorkeling, but I thought that these bulbs looked the most color-wise like what I had seen underwater in the gulf. I love the color and I'm getting pretty good growth out of my corals. :)

well David said that the capacitors get weak overtime so they might have trouble firing them. So, he said that if bulb doesnt fire, find someone with a HQI ballast or Pulse start ballast to do the initial fire and burn in time then it shouldnt be a problem. I turned mine on and let it sit for 9 hours. Went to go on the computer and when I came back, bam. Lit up. At first it looked like a light pink hue but it burned into a nice crisp white. Have to say that my corals are already doing better and a washed out neon green cap if finally getting some color back into it. The bulbs are really great. I just think that vendors and the coralvue website should mention the problem that we might run into if we run mag ballasts. Hope this clears it all up.

Hey, I thought you are not supposed to use HQI ballast for RF bulbs? Are you saying the owner now is saying you can use it to fire it up and burn it in? What about the warranty? I ran my 400W RF with HQI ballast and it only last for 3 weeks then it won't start again. I was told I can't return it b/c I used the HQI ballast and the warranty is no longer valid. How's that for a $60 bulb that only last for 3 weeks. BTW, I bought 2, the other one is working fine but the color is aweful and the SPS bleached out big time. Really hate the pink hue. Switched to 20K after 4 weeks of use. Definitely won't buy from them again.

I am running 400w coralvue ballast. You guys can check out some older pics of the tank in my photo gallery.I just ordered two more RL 1200k bulbs and once i have put them on I will take some new pics.

I would love to know the par rating on he 12ks. I ran the 250w version and loved the color but the growth was very poor

Any updates to report or any new users of these bulbs?
I just bought 2x 250w Reeflux10k SEs for my Icecap ballast. Should be getting them this week.

I installed the same bulbs on the same ballast 4 months ago. The color is perfect!

I am not sure what these guys are talking about with the pink color in the RL 10K bulbs. I used the 10K RL bulbs for 6 months and the growth I had was annoying! I found that I was always having to cut corals. It was really that much growth. I have had other bulbs on my tank before and never seen anything like the growth I had with these bulbs. I then decided to try the 12K RL. The 12K RL is the best of both worlds. You get great color and awesome growth. I also have to say the company that sells these bulbs has great customer support. Anytime I had a question, my emails were answered in no time! Give them a try I promise you will not be sorry you did.

Just a little FYI about the pink issue..

If you look at the bulbs and if the inner bulb ends are white then they will be pinkish, if they are clear then they are more blueish..

The white ends are the older ones and that pink issue should be long gone if you bought them now....

Rick,
did you have any pinkish light isues I read about on th ICs?

They are very white, whiter than the XM10K bulbs they replaced. I initially had a problem with the bulbs being three different colors, but CV sent me replacements and they have been solid.

I'll try the 12K next, but I'm not overly impressed by the 10K reeflux. Mine definitely have a pinkish hue to them. I don't mind it, but the colors of my corals seem to be off a little since I started running them...but there can be many things affecting my corals there. :)

FYI, next time I plan on purchasing the 12K bulbs. I like the 10K but I really liked the blue that I saw when I had different color bulbs.
