The other way would be to disconnect the VA wire, and hook it up to a 5v PWM output, like the RKL or the Reef Angel.

I'm trying to determine the cleaner/better setup for an Apex. 24v PWM module, or Stevesleds converter.

Bought both. I'll try one on one pump, and one on the other. Steve's can do 2 pumps at once, which is convenient. Then you just need to cut an ethernet cable to wire it to the apex.

Just some random ebay one that uses wire terminals instead of that 3 wire plug, to make hooking up to an Apex easier.

I'm not exactly sure it would truly work 100% with a 0-10v signal to it, even with a pot on it working right now. It's still a PWM module, and it doesn't mention full 0-10v compatibility anywhere. I think steve's might work better, since it actually converts the signal. That's why I'm going to test both.

Well, since I have two WP40s I just can't resist to put both in my 125g to see what they can do. Wow, the fish are struggling to stay in one place. The water surface is like a flowing river and the current in the tank stirred up a mini sand storm. Because the two pumps are not in sync so the waves seemed to cancel out each other but they are moving. I don't think anyone will need more than one in a 125g or less tank. All in all I am very pleased with the WP40. They are quiet and powerful. They seem to be well made and definitely a good value at this time. Now we just need to see how reliable they are and that only time will tell.:dance:

This has done what Vortec said it was going to do, make a low cost controllable pump. Or to put it another way. If tunzee and Vortec are ferrari and Lamborghini, then this pump is the Nissan GTR, the same performance for much much less. Can't wait to set up my next tank!
 
If anyone knows how to control the WP40 with RKE or RKL via the APC module, I will be very interested to know how it is done. I understand the APC module works with Tunze pumps.

Good analogy... I just wonder how many people here would know what a Nissan GTR even is? I was a Toyota guy. But I'd put my old MR2 up against a Nissan GTR in a race.

I'm sure they have one. I got a Pot with the PWM module that I got off of ebay. Just do a search for 24v PWM they are around 10 bucks from china. You just hook it up to the 24 volt lines to the pump. You leave the VA line hooked up to the controller.


This may work, but without knowing how the pump motor works it's probably a bad idea to chop up the DC volts to the pump. The pump was designed to take a 5v PWM signal to control speed so there is logic in the wet end, stuffing PWM down it's throat without knowing the design is likely to result in a failure. The voltage regulator for the logic in the pump was designed to take smooth 24v DC and make it (probably) 5v; it was not designed to take a series of voltage spikes as input.

No, I am buying the WP40s for my 92 gal corner tank. Here is a video with one WP40 in W1 mode in my 92g tank. I also have a Koralia PH running in the opposite direction. The WP40 is plugged into my RKE system which runs the pump for 30 sec and off for 15 sec. If I run the WP40 continuously I am afraid the waves will be spilling over the rim.

Sorry for the loud TV background noise. I have a speaker right on top of the tank.

Ok Guys! I got my MP40 today and it works great! I quickly went to modding it to try and figure out if I could control it with PWM. It worked like a charm I am able to control the intensity of all modes. The awesome part about all of this is that I can control it with any 0-10v controller IE Apex. The crappy part is that I sold my Apex JR awhile back with my DIY LED's. Looks like I will be buying one soon as well as a VDM module.

So you took the heatsinks off the PVMs and pushed them over so they would fit?

Thanks again for the feedback and video. You probably have several dozens of people watching your video and reading your feedback before buying a WP40.

I hope the WP40 is built to be turned on/off constantly. Some powerheads are not meant to be used like that.

True. But since the pump has a wave mode, W1, which the pump stops and starts in short cycle (the propeller actually comes to a complete stop in each cycle), I figure it should be able to handle the on and off cycle. This may be a true test for the pump in this regard. So far it has been running like that without any problem.
