Anyone with long term success keeping a Bandit Angel in a mixed reef?

Hey everyone,

Starting to look at fish to add for our next round of personal QT.

One of the fish I'm looking at is a Bandit Angel (Apolemichthys arcuatus).

The goal of our display is a mixed reef with sps, lps and polyps.

Just curious if anyone has had any success keeping a Bandit long term in a mixed reef.

If so, any tips?

If not, what's on the menu?

I've currently have a juvenile bandit so not much experience with one in a mixed reef.

However all my angels are in a reef tank with mostly softies. For the most part they leave everything alone.

I would be more worried if the corals can handle the water temp that most bandits like having. Mid to low 70 degrees.

The age old debate of corals like higher Temps and fish are better kept at lower Temps.

I think with a fish like a bandit you have to say are the corals more important to you or the fish. The question everyone should ask with angels.

For a bandit its more about the fish.

Also on advice I'd try to get one around 2 inches.

My current lady is less than an inch. She seems fine but I skipped Qt because I was worried about food. She definitely is feeding mostly on the live rock.

Running ~ 78 degrees for our Crosshatches, they've been pretty happy.

Hopefully that temp will be OK for a Bandit. Coral seem to be fine with the temp.

That's the reason I like purchasing juvenile angels yes they are a pain since they are so small but if you can raise them in your tank I think environmental concerns are less as they get older.

Not use to eating a particular food or water temp.

Also from my research bandits seem to not be prone to nip at corals.

One thing I've noticed that's different with the baby bandit than my other baby angels is that she does a lot more swimming in open water. My other baby angels didn't leave the rocks that often.

Would definitely like to try a smaller fish if possible.

I've seen how active those tiny Bandits seem to be :thumbsup:
 
I have mine for over a year maybe 2 years
On mixed reef , Temp raise up to 80 no problem. 81 it reduce its feeding since that too hot for it. Crosshatch juvenile pair maybe 3 years no issue with temp

How large was the Bandit when you got it?

What corals are in your tank?

I've had a trio for awhile with mostly SPS and A couple lps and a large clam. Mine like to mouth the corals every once in awhile but have never killed anything. The problem is is I have almost no PE which I makes a SPS dominate tank even less animate!

They were around 2" when I received them.

Was also considering a Potter's at some point...
 
Mine has not bothered my corals (LPS or SPS) and I actually do have good PE for the most part. Mine's housed now with C. multifasciatus, C. aurantia and a host of wrasses, anthias, etc. I did tho have to get rid of my AT as they were continuously "having words". :)
