Almost nothing touching the sand

And the bare concrete rock:

I go more for the natural reef look (used to be called the 'pile of rocks') even though it tends to ultimately function as an excellent detritus trap. Tank is 'scaped with the very large anemone in mind.

Not a big fan of all the arches myself - just doesn't look like any of the reefs I've seen while diving. Pair of aqua-mag rocks is a concession to having run out of real estate.

I would not call this skill, but after trying a few scapes and then lucking into a big piece of coral skeleton, which I broke in half to fit in my tall / skinny 150, this is what I ended up with.

Here's my scape. I have a new tank coming in December so I picked up more dry rock that I'll play around with to make a new scape before I cure it

Working on my 210 gallon reef tank. Re-did it with a more open lay-out and want to make it a SPS dominated reef. Still work in progress as I am not 100% happy yet with the rocks (esp right side) and the sand/ bottom has to be cleaned.

Old Tank Pic (2 years ago)

Today

My other, smaller reef tank (135 gal) - not a large tank but I thought I throw in a pic anyway.:)

I am getting ready to set up my 215 gallon tank.
In my last tank (a 125g) I had the typical 'wall of rock' look. Since I love large gorgonians and NPS corals I wanted something different this time.

I am using (old and new) pukani dry rock and nylon thread rods with bolts and washers (all nylon)

The new set up will accommodate a pair of jawfish and have approx 6-7" of DSB. The red coffee can in the pics is about that tall just to give you an idea of what will disappear in the sand

how I envision to plant it with gorgos, sun corals, etc.:

This time around I was looking for a more 3-dimensional look. Here's a picture from the top. The brown paper it sits on is the same footprint as the tank will be:

I took the pictures before I cut off the nylon rod ends. Obviously it's much less noticeable without ends sticking out.

Did you use a long drill bit to cut through the rock? I am thinking about using this method on my tank. I guess you could chisel the holes out, but I think a drill bit would be best.
