ASM Skimmer Club!

I have been asking the same questions on this thread. I read somewhere (I think way back in this tread several splits ago) that asm skimmer can handle the next size up sedra. I have a 3500. So if 3500 the 5000 and if 5000 the 9000. If i remember correctly I think someone did upgrade the 5000 to the 9000. But I couldnt get a good answer from anyone that has done this that justified spending about a hundred bucks for something that might work. I also considered switching to new pump (sicce) but chickened out and ended up buying a new sedra 3500 and doing the mesh mod with minimal results.

How about it, anyone used any other pumps to replace the 5000 that are pretty much "plug n play and improved performance"?

Ok, had a couple delays but I finally got my sump and G3 up and running. I pulled my old sump out and you guessed it, my 30 gal long sump would not fit under my stand. So out came the sawzall. I had to cut out the side of the stand to slide it in. I have the skimmer running with the stock impeller. I will probably let it run for a week or two and then put in the mesh mod impeller and see the difference.

Here are a couple of pics of the setup and the axe job on the side of the stand. I just screwed a piece of wood over the opening.

I did the same thing to my stand to fit a bigger sump. Did not hurt a thing. It does look like you have the skimmer in a bit to much water. If you can get the exhaust of the gate valve above the water it will run more stable for you.

Thanks I will see what I can do to get it above the water line. I can't lift my skimmer up any more. I may have to cut a bigger riser tube for the gate valve. where is your water line in your skimmer? Mine is midway between top of body and the collection cup. You can see it in the pic.

i just bought an asm skimmer, but have to wait to have it shipped to me. its a g-2 with a sedra 5000.

a couple questions, whats the footprint including pump, and what seems to be the best water depth to put my skimmer in? i would like to configure my sump while i wait.

Here is a pic of the patch job with wood and paint I had around the house.
It will do. I am half way to saving my custom 150 (48X36X20) that I will have to build a stand for.

dmopar, i assume this is a typo because a G2 comes with a sedra 3500, and the G3 comes with the 5000. If this is not a typo and you got the bigger pump. Please, please let us all know how this works out for you.

Many have said that asm skimmers can handle the next size up sedra pump to increase performance. But it doesnt not seem like anyone has really done this. I am curious how much of a headache the change in pump size would make in hooking it up to the skimmer body. I also dont know if you run the skimmer wide open if the water level in the skimmer would be too high. If it was I would assume you could add a gate valve between the pump and the skimmer body to dial it back. Then you could use this gate valve to control water level in the skimmer body instead of the gate valve at the skimmer output. Cutting back the water flow at the pump to the skimmer in my mind would be essentially like having a higher backpressure like having a higher head height for a return pump. But again I dont know if this would even be an issue.

Just some of my thoughts.

ive been doing some reading, and i hear the g2 skims like a mofo with the sedra 5000. i bought the skimmer used with a new 5000 pump, so we will see what happens. just gotta wait for it to arrive in the mail. my research shows the g2 and g3 have basically the same body, same diameter, and the g2 is actually slightly taller at 1".

incase anybodys interested the seller stated the footprint at 10x14 and did best in 9-10" of water.

Most of the newer more popular skimmer come with the sicce 2500 pump. Supposedly pull up to 35scfh with pinwheel and up to 50 with the meshwheel. I dont have an air gague but I would assume this is way more than my mesh modified sedra 3500 that I am not impressed with. I just replace my G2 pump but chickened out last minute and bought another sedra 3500. After reading more over the past month or so if I could go back I would have gone with the sicce. But you may want to wait for dmopars report with the sedra 5000 on his G2.

Hey guys, I have posted before, but am currently in the market for a G2 or G3 for my 150 Fowlr (right now).

I was told I could go with either one.

My question is that I will have to tun it outside of my fuge. Does the ASM G series come with the parts to do that or am I going to have to mod it?

I have seen it done. I have a used G3 I bought and I replaced all the o-rings, but the seals still leak a little. It is just a drip hear and there. I just put it in sump. You could always put a shallow plastic tray under it. The amount of water that leaks out of mine would evaporate quickly and would never fill the tray. I saw on RC in another thread that someone put silicone on the seal between the body and the cone. That is where mine leaks.

Paul, I have two 1" returns from my CPR overflow. One goes into the sump and one goes into my skimmer. I reduce it at the skimmer to a 1/2" T. The 1" pieces were just too big inside the skimmer. If I mod it to enter below the skimmer (into tube with diffusion plate) then I can go with the full 1".

Also as far as parts you would just need the gate valve mod and have the output go over the side and empty into the sump.

LOL thank you safedad, I should have asked for pics of a ASM Skimmer RUNNING connected to the sump but NOT inside of it.
