Bay Area LFS List! :D

Atlantis, Aquascene, Aquarium Concepts and Aquatic Gallery to name a few (they're all really close to each other as well)

Any one knows what happened to Everything Fishie at Grand Avenue?

I went their to check them out and noticed that 3600 Grand avenue was empty.

Did they move or have closed down?

Oh, BTW - Lucky Goldfish really has a nice display tank - thanks for mentioning it. I was really impressed at their setup and their frag tank. One of the, older asian, guy talked to me for a while and took the time to show me their stock of corals ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ even though they were a little busy.

They moved to Webster Street in Alameda. New Alameda Aquatics.

Thats Hunter. Real nice guy!

Look at Scotts Valley - Round Up Pet Center - They are remodeling and it is looking great....Lots of new fish and they are adding corals....

Just wondering if anyone knows which of the 3 lfs listed in Oakland is worth visiting.

Connie's Tropical Fish

Everything Fishie

Lucky Goldfish

Thanks.
Definitely make time to visit Lucky Goldfish. Hunter has set up an incredible display tank that I will let speak for itself. He has a good supply of SPS usually. Connies is a mess, I hear that there are new owners coming so who knows what will happen. I haven't been to Everything Fishie in a very long time but as I recall it was pretty small but he had some neat corals.

superway aquarium in hayward, small saltwater selection. interesting freshwater selection. good prices

family pets in fremont, i forget if they have saltwater tanks. interesting freshwater selection, overpriced

i dont think politics should decide who makes it on the list and who doesnt. it should be a list of all pet stores. let the person decide if they want to go there. but petco and petsmart have their own websites which list their locations.

also, how is online cheap? when you add shipping its more expensive than lfs. where can i find local people selling freshwater fish and animals? thanks, this list is great

I don't find that statement to be true at all, especially if you buy multiple items, although I do believe in supporting my lfs.

regardless, I think IMO that if you don't support your LFS, then would you pay say....$9.99 for a blue knuckle hermit crab at Dr's Foster and Smith or would you pay $4.99 for one at a LFS?

on another note, if you found something cheaper online, can't you just ask the people at the LFS to do their best to match the prices? I'm sure they won't be offended....and then it would be up to you to patronize them or not.....doesn't that sound more fair than saying everything else in the last two to three posts?

Not offended? Nice try, but all that I know, after getting BEAT down with that very question 1000 times a day, they'll be more then offended. Look at it this way, if a companys sells the same product you do for your cost, you gonna price match? Most etailers have a MUCH lower overhead then LFS + the larger ones get a huge price discount from the manufacturers.

I do seem to get around this board. I've never been to California, but here I am in the BAR forum at RC....
I'm just going to chime in here to tell you why I support local business, be it a LFS or a hardware store......
If you own a house, you pay property taxes. Businesses also pay property taxes, and without them, residents have to pay what they would have paid. Supporting the mom and pop hardware store, and keeping them in business saves you money, even if you spend $0.03 more for a locknut there than you would at Home Depot.
Aside from paying into your local economy, your LFSs offer you, the hobbyist something much bigger. The satisfaction of having it NOW. Have you ever run flat out to the LFS because you needed carbon to clean up a mistake? Ever have your main pump decide it's too tired to go on? A good LFS has a replacement, or at least a loaner to get you through, keep your system alive.
I have my LFS guy's cell phone number, and have asked him to stay open late, even open on a day off for me. He does it, because I support his store. Without a good LFS around, I don't think I'd have stayed with the hobby as long as I have. There is a LOT more to consider than price.

That brings up a great point Larry, sales tax and local economy. I for one want to help my community by keeping my tax dollars and hard spent money locally so we can actually repair our roads, pay our cops, heck, have schools and teachers for our kids (we lost 2 schools here, and more are slatted to close if no moeny can be found). We've lost libraries, community service projects and even our local infastructurer is falling apart (street lights out for months, pot holes, closed roads in the mountains w/ no funding to clear them, etc.)

Went to Rommel's place today (ultimatefrags dot com) to pick up a big order of zoanthids. His website is very detailed with pictures!

He fragged the pieces ahead of time and had them ready when I got there. He even went so far as to fragging one of the palys and feeding it and everything so when I got there everything was great.

He gave me a free frag too! An amazing orange zoo. I just ordered a lot of zoos and a paly from him, but only ordered 1 polyp of each (my tank's tiny, and I want to grow them out), but all the frags he gave me had MUCH more than 1 polyp each,e ven though that's what I ordered.

He's really cool, nice guy, definately checkout his stuff in San Jose. He runs out of the garage, but you can definately give him a call.

I went to Atlantis Aquarium on Fremont BLvd. Firstly: SOOO CONVENIENT! It's really close to the highway. It's a small store, but stocked with good stuff. Their display tank is amazing, right next to the entrance. The guy working there was really nice, asked us to let him know if we needed anything, greeted and said goodbye and have a nice day, very cool. I felt welcome and he definately looked like a nice guy. There was a bit of algae here and there, but overall stock looked good. Lots of nice SPS frags, an acan prop tank, etc. He had a few mantises, one that was at least 5" long! I was like *** how the hell? I never knew there were ones that large.

Anyway big thumbs up to atlantis. Prices were high, but not out of the ordinary for a good LFS =)
