Bean's 300 Gallon AGE Build

Cody how are you going to clear the stand thru a doorway?
thats going to be really wide.
Congrats BTW.
When you get the tank let me know and ill come help you load unload

he installed a slider in his house just for his tank stand.
I love building a house around a tank. :)

The stand is 40" Tall so we can always flip it on its side... but I'm pretty sure 42" will also clear the slider opening. I think I have 44" if I remember right.

If anyone comes across any trick 48" Long X 36" W SUMP or Build threads or has set up a similarly sized setup, ideas would be much appreciated!

Or anyone really that wishes theyd have designed their sump differently or wished they added something. I would love to hear about it and get some suggestions.

The tank and sump will be a traditional berlin setup. I wish I could have a remote sump in the garage but its not in the cards.

I'll be receiving my sump from AA John in 2 weeks. I will post pictures of them. Made 2 sumps: 54 x 29 x 20 and have them connected together. My steel stand has an annoying bar in the middle that prevents 1 long sump.

filter sock > rollermat > equipment > refugium > Siporax box > return > dosing chamber > dry equipment chamber.

the idea is drain goes through filter socks. If i get lazy and it overflows, the next section is the theiling rollermat. the baffles will trap most of the detritus in these 2 chambers. 3rd chamber is for skimmers and reactors. Then the second sump starts with a large refugium. the next section is a drilled box with Siporax inside. after that is a small return section. all the remaining space is a dry section. I will put calcium reactors, ARID, and any other equipment that may leak inside.

some addons I included:

-heater holder
-probe holders, dosing containers
-Emperor Aquatic UV holder
-tons of extra holes around the edges so I can plumb equipment outlets into.
-red dragon pump controller stands (copied the dreambox)
-adjustable skimmer stand
-filter sock silencer

Thanks @Monkie. I'd love to see pics when you get it.

I've done a lot of sumps, Learned a lot too. Hit me up before you finalize yours. There are a few things I would have done differently on my current one. I might have some ideas to help you out.

Who's gunna build your sump? John has a lot of good idea as well.

You gunna run filter socks? I kinda wish I didn't even put filter sock holders on mine. It's a complete waste of space now. I haven't used filter socks in a year +.

Yeah planned on calling John down the line. Figure I will wait until I get the tank and stand in November. I'm with you on filter socks. There were times though when I would use one during cleaning etc but 95% of the time I don't use them. You can see the difference in water clarity, but I'm not about to change them every few days to accomplish that.

I was really interested in the triton method. Put the fuge as the first chamber, then skimmer, then return. Lots of guys having good success with it that way. If your not gunna run filter socks anyways, might be a good option. Maybe research it a bit and see what you think.

I've sat through a few Triton talks, I just don't think its for me. A lot of elements to worry about now (some of which may not matter) and it can get expensive.

I like the fuge for pod production etc, and I just enjoy checking them out at times, so not just for nutrient export. I feel like having the fuge before the skimmer would be counterproductive in that way. Is that what they are saying for people to do? How I understood it was just having a sufficiently sized fuge, not necessary where in the sump it was.

For instance, regarding lithium, my tank was extremely high according to them, yet my tank looked the best at that time than it ever had.

I could be wrong, but from everything I've read, they recommend the fuge first. Have your drains come right down into the fuge. And yea, they recommend it to be as large as possible.

I didn't necessarily mean all the dosing, more about how they setup the sump/fuge.

Thanks Nick, yeah I will consider that as well. I'm up for trying something new for sure.

I feel like having the fuge first... a TON of detritus would get stuck in that section which would be a lot more difficult to remove than say if it were a sock section. What do you think?

I would have to read more, but I think the idea is that the detritus settles, and the macro algae absorbs the nitrates/phosphates. Could be wrong, but I think that's how it was explained.

Like you said, might be interesting to try something different.

Cody this is exciting! As far as the fuge. I honestly think you can place it anywhere in the sump. The main thing you have to consider is water turnover. If you want macro to "help" your tank export nutrients the water can't just constantly rush past it. How we always did it was to spit off the drain with a valve to the fuge. You can then adjust the amount of water to fit your needs. This way it wont stir up stuff constantly. Hope that makes sense. :)

Yeah definitely. I'll ask Joe Caparatta a bunch of questions at RAP since Unique and Triton will have a booth.

Yes it does, thanks Crystal. I'll probably be hitting you up with questions as I get closer. I don't want to do any of this twice or three times, this time around hehehe

I hate filter socks too. I think in my next sump, I'll have some kind of filter floss tray that I can just change and throw away every few days. My sump is a mess without socks even though I have a powerhead in there. I would need one in every section.

Jason JRPdriver made one without socks. He said it works great. Just need to clip it onto the sump better.

I thought about doing something similar, but decided to stick with socks. Sump gets too dirty without them. I hope the rollermat will reduce some workload
