Bonsai Tree inspired Aquascape

crazy4acros - great job and congrats on winning thread of the month! im starting over with my 220 gallon and want to go with a minimalist approach and a creative approach to aquascaping. yours has been the best example i've found.

hate to ask this, but ive' been through about 50% of this thread so far. aside from the first pago or so, is there anywhere oyu give a more detailed, step by step approach to how you did this? Maybe with some extra pics?

I'm so sorry but I did not take any pics when I was doing the aquascape, I was just winging it as I went on and came out with the end result. It is very hard to explain or teach due to many variables, for example not all the rock are the same some are more fragile than others, or some may not need any rods at all and just zip ties to hold it together. It is just one of those things where you would have to just give it a shot and see what works with the rocks you have. I will try to post a pic and point out where my rods are.

:) got it. no prob. thats what i was gonna try to do anyway. oh, you mentioned big als? you got your supplies there? what are "pins", I think you mentioned?

I don't recall mentioning "big als" but anyway here are some pics to give you an idea on how the rods/pins and zip ties are working together.

RED = Rods

GREEN = Zip ties

Sweet tank, great scaping

I have never gone the route of connecting rocks like that, but now you have me thinking...very cool.

Most of the livestock are bought locally in AZ tank as well.

crazy - do you find that the cardinalfish tend to be more active at night? or have you been able to adjust their diet such that they are more active in the day? I've noticed mine tend to stay under the overhangs/etc. Still love how they school about. Are your still sticking together?

My cardinals are all over the place, weird it's almost as if they pair up together and swim around the tank. I'm guessing that there is no big fish to spook them and so they swim freely through out the tank. They will also all gather up in front of the tank whenever anyone walks up to it thinking it's time to feed, they have adjusted to feeding during the day when the lights are on. Also they only school from one end to the other when I’m cleaning the glass with the Magfloat.

They pack together tightly and hang out under the overhang when the lights go out. My red spots are always out above the overhang in the open water playing in the current and my Anthias are attention hogs, they follow you hehehe.

As many of us have been inspired by this thread/aquascape build. I am finally settled in afterm y move and have reconstructed some of my rock work to incorporate a much more open look and solid structure. I will post some photos of my first structure later today. I can't build the other structure until I drain the holding tank and assemble those rocks should look pretty good when I am done.

gkimble, They are Kaelini Tonga, hand picked from a tub at my LFS.

AJDuran, It varies depending on the application, anywhere from 4-10 inch it is basically cut as you go.

Thanks so much for the pictures! Helps alot. Very cool.

So I'm guessing a big key was balance? I think you posted that the base part of the structure is a very heavy rock which helped?
When I start mine in the next few weeks I'll let you know how it goes.

Oh:

haha, i knew i saw it somewhere. On the first page, BigAl posts a question and you responded "BigAl, Peg, glue and zip ties for pice of mind on the out cropping for the overhang. The top table has a continuous rod going straight up along with epoxy and zip ties." - I read that and thought you got your stuff at Big Als!! Haha :lol:
