C. meredithi questions

Good news: He's swimming around normally all alone in the 110g and ate like a champ last night, so I foresee a complete recovery from the smackdown. SUCH a beautiful fish though, it's going to be hard to let him go :(

Sorry to hear about the relationship issues, Peter :( Have you considered marriage counseling?

All jokes aside, at least he is looking good and eating well for you. Could have certainly been worse.

After much personal deliberation, I've decided to keep the large male, and sell off the smaller one :( I hate to have to get rid of either!

Different lighting. Other than the yellow spots on the face being larger on the big male they are identical.

The big guy is easily 9" TL, while the smaller one is 7-8" TL.

Yeah, it does suck. :(

Sorry Peter-

It seems like this means that getting two juvenile meredethi doesnt mean that one will become the male and the other will be a female. Could it be that these fish are either male or female when theyre born and thats that?

Good question. I assumed these angels are protogynic sequential hermaphrodites. Otherwise wouldn't they have killed each other long ago in that comparatively tiny 110g tank?

I think the problem is that no matter what, the fish will always be programmed to try to reach the alpha, in this case male, position. A female can get this opportunity when the current dominant male dies, or is otherwise compromised. My big male did not adjust well to the 240g when they first got moved. He sulked in the corner a lot, didn't eat well, etc. After a while like this, the female saw her opportunity to dethrone the male, and took it.

So u think that the smaller one was a female just waiting for a chance to become a male?

Exactly. When they were in the 110 the male was constantly doing all sorts of funny displays and such to/for the female. His face would also get extremely BRIGHT blue. A week of nothing obviously signaled to the female that it was time for a change. FWIW the male's blue mask has been extremely dark since he has been alone :(

Weird- so it would stand to reason that if u had only one meredethi, eventually it would turn into a male right?

Yeah, but like anthias and any other fish like that...not as pretty as it could be.

I have a 3" scribbled that looks like he might be a male. I know it's too early to be sure but it's def Lookin more like a male than female. I'd like to get this 2" meredethi that's at my LFS. Do u think these two angels will be ok together long term? They would have to be in quarantine together for about 1 month then going into my 90 gal where they will stay for about one year together before tank upgrade. Will the male scribbled stop the meredethi from becoming a male or is that only for the same species?

Does anyone have anymore info or experience concerning male and female coloration of these angels? Will the the mask on a male only truly develop great coloration in the presence of a female?
