Connecticut Mag Rescue

Grizzled & Cynical
Well, taking a cue from some of you here, saw a rather unhappy Mag at my LFS. Store is top notch, but just not equipped to treat them, so, I am now $25 poorer, but have a second Mag under my care. Nice one, with green tentacles, and a brownish base. Looked really bad at the store, so into HT with Cipro and fingers crossed. There was another one there also, but only have HT facilities for one at a time - plus the other one was BIG.

If I am able to recover this new one I think I may sell my prior one because it has just become too big for my tank.

So, Sunday Sept 1st - Cipro Day 1

Still early in treatment, but Mag looks loads better already. Mouth was gaping with cottony stuff oozing out. Not fully, but localized deflation. Overnight nem spat out a lump of black 'poop'. This morning mouth is tight and no sign of any 'guts'; fully inflated. Still cannot tell base color as nem continues to hunker down on the bottom. I will take a picture later today.

Great job on taking in a sick Mag.. I did the same recently, and it looked awful for about 2-3 days, then when it perked up, it perked up... Keep on it, and you'll be rewarded with a beautiful animal.

Hope it works out for you.

I picked one up that didn't look overly bad, open mouth but good color. I QTed it and it went down hill fast and never recovered

Monday Sept 2nd - Cipro Day 2

Looking OK - actually looked better this morning, but my experience with sick Mags is they can flag a bit in the afternoon. Anyhow, optimistic!

that is a nice looking mag, best of luck with it, i think it looks very healthy. I suggest you treat it to the full recommended period and not shortcut the treatment so that it is fully treated. Please dont feed it at this time as i know alot of reefers are tempted to feed their new nem.

Oh, no, you definitely don't want to be feeding them in HT; not necessary, and just setting yourself for ammonia problems. I am undecided on whether to add this nem as a second to my DT or replace the current occupant, either way a full 7 days of Cipro in HT is on order.

Incidentally, Mag continues to look loads better. I do believe this one will be a tick in the 'win' column. Will be interesting to see how it looks under 14K lighting; currently in HT, light is a simple 5K CFL.

He looks load better.
25.00 for that one. Lucky you (but lucky only because you can keep him alive). Good luck with him.

Cipro Day 3

Looking really good, though perhaps not as colorful as I first thought. Will complete a full 7 days in the HT even though I do believe it to be over the hump.

Any clever suggestions on how to get it off the bottom of the tank when the time comes? I guess I'm inclined to use a single edge razor (have done this before without injury) or perhaps just shade it to prompt movement onto a rock?

I normally just use an old credit card and slowly work it off the glass or my finger. I would be worried with a razor you would cut the foot.
Also I would pull the mag off the bottom and let him attach to a rock in the hospital tank in a day or so transfer it to whatever tank you plan on.
Pulling it off the glass is enough stress no need to add a change in environment/lighting. Ive found with this method they generally stay on the same rock in whatever tank I move them to.

Just my 2 cents.

Wednesday, Sept. 4 - Cipro Day 4. Unchanged from yesterday so no need to clutter things with an unnecessary new photo.

Haven't updated because nothing has really changed. Nem continues to do fine and is now approaching a full week of Cipro. About the only thing I have noticed is that there is quite a lot of mucus sloughing off the base. Is this anything to be concerned about, I wonder? No signs of any deflation cycles, and mouth shows no signs of innards or the black poop.
