Cool Fish on Diver's Den

It's a good rule of thumb to assume all fish are jumpers and cover your tank with netting. You're usually never home to witness carpet surfing.

I had a fox face jump when I had the lid open to feed once. I instinctively reached out and caught it. Man did that hurt!:blown:

Definitely. And all the ones I've seen have the same vibrant coloration. But very hard to get one, I've been trying for a couple years now.

They come from Fiji to Indonesia where is regularly shipped from. Why are they so hard to get?

Not really sure. Divers den only has a few a year. I've only gotten an in stock notification from LA once. They're on the lists from Walt Smith pretty much every week but after two dead from worms, two months apart I'm leary of ordering another from them.

We get a lot of wrasses from SDC. Great quality, but haven't seen the ember on their list. This particular lfs doesn't order from quality.

The other thing about the Ember; it doesn't keep those colors in captivity - tends to dull out to the uniform dusky color.

Does that apply to singles or also to pairs? As I understand it this is a mating coloration of the males, so I would expect it to fade if kept alone without a girl to impress.

Good question; that's my understanding too and I don't know of anyone who's attempted multiples.

I like this guy.

The issue with blennies is that they are either male or female - no sex change.
Furthermore with some species it is very hard to tell the difference while the males and females of other species look so different from each other in shape and coloration that they have previously been described as different species.
And to make it really confusing, with some this sexual dimorphism exist only during the mating season while outside that male and female look the same and won't get along with each other.

Ember blenny super male

I keep missing them. I've ordered two from Walt Smith through an lfs and they keep coming in with worms. Second one was doa with a live worm in the bag. :-(

I've owned a super male before, it was called a stigmata blenny when I bought it. It's been my experience that the redline only shows when they're stressed. It's normal coloring is a bland dark, dusky color which it showed ever since the first day I introduced it to my tank.

Wayne that sounds much like what a much more common tribal blenny does. I had one and the only time it showed the "tribal" markings was when stressed or when it was aggressive.
