d2mini's "Essential Focus" Mixed Reef Build

Can you type it in correctly? (so that it can be seen) If it won't show up here on RC, well there's your conflict of interest.
Reefcentral doesn't support links to many outside sources. D2mini doesn't advertise anything what so ever about r2r. I mentioned that file was created by someone over there. I have no affiliation with either site other then I send both sites money to support both of them.

Sounds like someone is on a witch hunt to me. D2mini is a great contributing member here on reefcentral.

Fascinating thread! I look forward to hearing more on your Triton Experience. Your cabinet interior is so pretty you should have glass doors! I also look forward to your refugium's evolution. I think your reds in there are fine btw. My caulerpa overgrows mine, and they always look fine when I uncover them.

Thank you @jason429 to responding to @vitodog 's question.
Been a busy morning. :)

Yes, I'm a mod on the other forum but I contribute equally to both.
I feel both can exist together and there are good things about both forums.

I can't even type in the address correctly, (blocked) so wouldn't this be a conflict of interest?

blocking does not imply anything other than the owner's/moderator's choice to restrict links to certain places, and other reefkeeping forums is one of those places, in general, not in specific.
Reefcentral doesn't support links to many outside sources. D2mini doesn't advertise anything what so ever about clay-boa.
^^ clay-boa is what most banned text is auto-replaced with. Either that or ****'s like they did for a certain acrylic tank manufacturer (who is no longer in business). So if you type in the URL of any other forum or website that is blocked, you get a link to www.clay-boa.com. Click it. It's a bit of potty humor. Quite literally.

8 hours is my current period... from 10pm to 6am. :D

There is a guy on the other forum who lives in Germany and said he was going to run over to Triton today to talk to the guys and see what they have to say.
There is another guy on that forum running a Triton tank and his algae bed looks like swamp on top! He never touches it. He says different types of algae, live and die, come and go, thru different cycles.

I wish I could link to a few different posts over there.
Here's a snippet from one...

By adding TRITON "œBASE ELEMENTZ", algae form greater amounts of amino acids, vitamins and various types of sugar. These are absorbed in metabolic processes, e.g. by the microorganisms living in the algae, which are also supplied with "œBASE ELEMENTZ". In turn, microorganisms such as plankton are a high-quality source of food for other forms of life, including several types of coral. Furthermore, organic substances are released when the algae die off, which gives creatures in aquaria that depend on them another option for absorption.

A metabolic chain, which assures a constant supply of amino acids, vitamins and sugar to the aquarium system, is generated in the tank by the natural process of producing and consuming substances. This principle is also found in nature. Very healthy coral reefs, for instance, are frequently located near areas where seaweed flourishes. Another advantage of "œalgae catalysation": Substances generated directly in an aquarium by algae are considerably more effective than supplements added artificially.

So I dunno, man!
Previously I would have fully agreed with you, but now... :uhoh3: lol
Mnnnn.. I agree to a certain extent,a large extent. Like 99.5 percent honestly. But, at least in the experience with these crazy lights, and me growing it to the extreme.. Basically meaning me doing nothing at all with the cheato to the point literally that it was a brick when I tried to pull it out, I think because it's so dense all the way through.. That it gets to the point(lol, and your almost, almost there with yours give it another week as an experiment), that it has no where to grow, and it is out of the water... And you touched on the one thing I miss, and it does make sense completely from experience, is the immense amount of life that the cheato brick(lol, let's call it what it is dude) holds and produces.. And that thrives off it.. And now that you mention it, hmm.. Since I've been running the scrubber, my sticks have lightened to levels I have never had in my systems.. But then, I always had cheato madness growing also.. Hmn, hmm... That theory is sounding more appealing..

And pm me dude, I'm interested even though I'm not growing cheato at the moment.. Lol

And oh, just fyi, it does pretty good with a scrubber also, and at least so far. The light on top that is.. Just throwing that out as another thought and experiment with the same equipment. It's an experiment of mine, in an attempt to save money on buying more lights.. But it seems to work pretty well so far.

And another one Dennis I have been thinking about, isI threw out all my cheato in the move, but with these lights, as strong as they are, honestly, if I could build a small cage, I wouldn't mind growing a small, controlled amount of cheato just for the pod population.. Lol, but I had said I was going to try and rely on the scrubber for a while.. And see how it does.. I'll keep you posted though..

How hot does your Mars Hydro get? Do you think it's possible for it to lay on top of a clear acrylic top of a fuge?
May look a little tacky(yes,I admit that) but, some 1x2 cut to size works great on mine.. Or,a pic light stand also works.. I'm in and out of mine a lot now, so the wood works well.. More function over form..Lol

haha, nice Damon.
What a bunch of dorks... we're in a reef forum (dorky enough) and most of my build thread is focused on a bunch of algae in refugium (dork to the extreme). Coral? Fish? What's that?

I'll keep this hands off experiment going.
I just added a big bunch of dragons breath I picked up from an awesome local reefer yesterday. Just shoved it in there. Found a little space in the front. :D

I did my 6 month sump and equipment cleaning this weekend. i have one of the refugium lights ordered as well... project for this weekend.

It's an interesting experiment. My guess is that it will soak up more and more nutrients as it grows ever denser. The biggest worry is that it may eventually choke itself out, crashing and releasing everything it took up, back into your system. But hopefully, it has a more controlled die-back/succession, like the Triton guys have suggested.

It's nice to see you super-cool reef guys dorken' it up with the plants! Just keep in mind, if you find yourself spending more time with your refugium than your reef, you're may be ready to do a dedicated planted tank!

Come to the dork side…

Ha! You know dude, I have been entrapped in this nutty algea thing ever since I first read about it, well over 10 years ago.. The only thing, is, the tech wasn't there at that point and time to do what we needed to be done..

And yeah, I admit I'm probably one of the most dangerous dorks out there.. Lol, but just like you and me, look at all the people that are buying up these lights now after they see what they can and certainly will do.. It's pretty cool actually.. Dork or not man, somewhere down the line, someone will thank us..

And I had to laugh when I read you stuffed it in there.. Ha ha ha.. Cool though! Lol, of course I will be watching your progress.. What would be awesome is if it all intertwined and made a psychedelic algea brick! Lol

Honestly, I have never had it happen, and I've messed with grow lights and cheato for quite a few years.. I have had it happen with caleurpa.. Which is an extremely dangerous algea imho to bring into your system to begin with, but that much more aggressive growth, in a decent sized area(i would say, anything larger than a x12 inch space), your dancing with the devil and time..

I had mine going 16 hours under sodium, and it still went sexual.. And the sodium has nothing on the mars, and even less on the Vispar that I'm running now(my mars is resting in the box.. Lol)..And I was lucky,I only had, if I remember a 11x4 space then, but it was packed.. It went sexual and turned the whole tank white.. I caught it fast enough, and only a tiny portion had started, but, your talking about very, very enriched algea, as far as light and I'm thinking it's natural composition is concerned..

The cheato though, the most you have to be concerned about is making sure when you harvest that you don't over harvest..because it grows so fast and you take for granted it's power. I have,a couple of times pulled too much and shocked it.. It always recovers, but the return to it's normal growth rate is very evident..

But that's the only problem I've faced with cheato and growing in this rate and fashion over the years.. With the led, you don't have to worry about heat or hot spots, or burning it, etc.. It's awesome..

If you keep the lights on 24 hrs won't that avoid the caulerpa from going sexual? I noticed no one runs the lights 24 hrs anymore. Why is that?

Personally, I've never run my refugium light 24 hours.
I run it opposite of my DT lighting to help keep the pH from dropping as much overnight.
But I also never put caulerpa in there.

hmmm.. interesting - I had thought about using Ozone. Are you hooking it up to your Skimmer or what?
Yes, my LifeReef is setup to run ozone and it recirculates unused ozone.

All men play on 10...j/k. Older song came to my head when I saw the dial going from 0 to 10 :) New toys are always fun - never grow old, never too young to enjoy toys :)
I was thinking of scribing an 11 into the metal housing. ;)
