DanW's 187 SPS Dominated Reef Journal

Man that sucks Dan. I have gotten away from netting for that very reason.
Yeah, that happend back in August - 09. I was having trouble finding 1/4" netting locally so I used 1/2" bird netting from HD...yet another rookie mistake. I jumped on a group buy that Kenny did on the "real stuff" and haven't had any issues since. Live and learn unfortunately at the expense of a nice Pseudojuloides severnsi :(

Oh that really sucks! I use the 1/4" netting and that has not happened. Just remember to change out the netting annually as it gets brittle and the wrasses will then break right through it. Lost my supermale Rhomboid to that earlier this year. :hmm5: Sorry you lost yours in the netting ... which wrasse was it?

That is some expensive fish jerky... If it had to happen, better to happen then, becuase I think your wrasses now are multiple times as rare and expensive.

Dang Sara, I just put another task on my list. I've never changed the netting and its been well over a year. It was a Royal Pencil Wrasse.

True...I'll cry if I lose any of the current wrasses :fun5:

How about a new month growth sequence of one of my slowest growing corals:

Looking really good Dan, I love the progression shots. But not happy to hear it is a slow grower. I got a piece in what I will call a "blind trade" on my side. After I cut the piece I was trading, I found out the piece I was receiving was 1/4".... I assumed it was a 1/4" in height, but no it is 1/4" flat piece cut from the base. So I'm going to say I have about 5-6 corallites of the blue matrix. Now that I see how long it takes before it really starts growing, I estimate I will have a piece about the size of your original frag in about 50-years. I've had the frag for 1-month and I don't think it has grown at all yet.
Again, great pics, I love the color of the blue.

Ryan my piece was also pretty much flat with a little tiny bump in the middle. It encrusted for ever and any branches it did try to grow only sprouted like 1/2". Only recently that its been growing upwards/outwards.

Great stuff Dan. Gotta love the Matrix. I was sad when I lost my main colony :sad1:
Thanks Mark, I didn't know you lost your main colony. It was pretty big IIRC. And yeah, gotta love the color, PE and coralite growth structure combo.

Yep, luckily I had started another piece in the shallow a few months before my trouble. Thats life. I'm over it

It's all about contingency planning

Multiple systems is the way to go. Especially with how much automation that many of us use on a daily basis, Murphy is always lurking.

Good to hear and see good progress.

Can we get a nice up to date FTS?
