What's up with this epidemic? Ian, didn't know you had issues too. Things back to normal yet?

Mark, I've always used kalk and have been using pure coke since day one. That stuff is good :D

Yeah, it's leveled out to where I'm ready to track down a few new pieces ;)

What's even more frustrating is when dummies like this dude in town with a 300 gal. that has never tested his water is successfully growing these huge colonies. I'm beginning to think doing less is more when it comes to sps.

Then there's my friend Kirk that's only in town 2 days a week, changes his water every 8-10 months and lets his wife feed the tank and his tank is insane with growth :(

What about you Kenny, you going to Rich's shindig?

Not jiving you or anything, Brian. A local reefer friend works at a Coca Cola plant and that's what they use so it's supposedly very high grade. Now why exactly they are using this stuff in their products is beyond me :eek2: But I still love my Coke

I think your on to something Ian.

No offense take Kenny. I laugh out of it.

I hear you on the less is more. My old 30 was like that until I took a bigger bite than I could chew :fun5:

Yeah, I'll most likely go unless something comes up at the last minute. Won't be selling though, just to hang out.

Man, I hear you guys about if it's not one thing it's another and just when you're getting your confidence back the hobby humbles you. Sara I was using BRS kalk and I'm not saying that that is the culprit but it did seem to happen when the kalk was re-started. My plan is to do some big water changes but leave the CA Rx running and hope for improvement. All of my other parameters are good. Mark I agree with Kenny, I don't think that adding kalk is the issue but it may be the specific bucket/batch of kalk I got but like I said who knows. I am definitely not the guy to measure the effectiveness (or un-effectiveness) of any method for sure :clown:.

Dang Ian/Brian sorry to hear about your issues but it sounds like you guys have worked them out. BTW Ian, that Acan frag is starting to color up and come to life. Oh and that acan in your avatar is also crazy!

BTW I'm not going to be able to make Richard's deal, just got my son's summer baseball schedule and I've got a conflict. Hope you guys have a great time. You guys can raise your coke cans to those of us that won't be able to make it

I've been running a Kalk reactor for 4 years now with my auto top-off systems with no issues. I had switched from the Rowa product that I got for free with the last Kalk reactor purchase back to Mrs. Wages which was the standard and I've recently switched to the Brightwell Kalk powder.

 Fwiw, Ive experienced the best results from my SPS by keeping it simple and no dosing of any of those hyped up additives. Weekly water changes combined with super stable parameters is the way to go. I used to dose all kinds of things and finally learned the hard way that its all truly unnecessary and most often detrimental to the health of the corals. :jester:

I don't think that flow is my issue. That being said I'm contemplating swapping positions the 6105s and the Vortechs. Vortechs are currently in the front but if I put the 6105s there I can aim them at the corals across the tank. What I'm concerned about is that since my rock structure is pretty high that although the Vortechs have a wide flow it could really blast the corals near the back.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Dan :sad1: It could be the batch of kalk that caused some issues since you mentioned the problems started right after adding the new batch to the kalk reactor. Fwiw, Ive always used brs kalk and had great results with it. But I add mine to a reservoir and allow the impurities to settle to the bottom. I think you have enough flow also but I remember you mentioning that they're only set at about 40%. Is it possible to set both of them at 100% without causing a sand storm? That would be a great amount of flow if it were possible.

Thanks Ramzy, I may try to move around the power heads this weekend to see if I can readjust the flow pattern but I don't think it is a flow issue. Hoping that turning off the kalk reactor will solve the problem.

Yeah, I couldn't afford to live closer to the ocean like some ballers. If you want, I can just put a pound of this stuff in a box so you don't have to wait. I'll make sure it's tightly sealed to get past the sniffing dogs.
