Use some self leveling compound to even the floor then epoxy paint. Quick cheap easy n looks good

Thanks for the reply, I'm going to have to level it regardless if I'm going tile or not. I'm heading out today to check out my options. Also considering a trough style floor drain.
Is this build ever going to end? lol

Happy Fathers day to all!

Get on with it would ya! Happy Fathers Day :)

Sometimes I think i just need to grab a case of beers, pop and some Captain and have a fish build party and just knock this build out in a weekend lol.

But don't worry, I have the whole week off for vacation. I'm going dedicate sometime to the fish room for sure.

Hey guys and gals, so I've been thinking about the flow for the inside of this tank and I'm not 100% sure what to do. Initially I was thinking of putting 2 MP40 on opposite ends of the tank and having them face each other. This should push the water from the outsides to the centre overflow. But I thought to myself do I want people to see a power head on the side of the glass when they first enter my home? I can live with one on the right side as you can't see it from the front of the house.

So I've also thought about putting the 2 Mp40 on the black glass and centred on each side for a cleaner look. But I'm worried that I'd have to keep the output low because it would most likely blow the sand away from the front glass. This would probably not support the flow I would need for sps. Especially once it's grown in a bit.

So now I'm thinking I should put 4 MP40 on the back wall at low speeds to increase the flow. I'm not sure though. I want to make sure the flows going to be nice and random without dead spots. Again, I'm back to the Mp40 on the side glass lol.

Any thoughts on how many I would need and where to place them for a clean looks? MAybe a combination of back wall and side glass? Ahhh d:headwally: decisions, decisions :confused::confused:

thanks

Build is looking more and more amazing. Awesome work.

Have you thought about the new Jebao RW pumps? I completely understand if anyone thinks that the Jebao is not worthy of this tank. I get it but just throwing ideas out there. The new RW15 pump is made in a way where you can turn the direction of the pump head. So, you can mount it against the back wall and turn it so that it pushes water from one end to another end of the tank. If you want even more flow in all directions, then what you can do is add another two RW8, which is another smaller pump for the lesser flow area without having dead spots. 2 x RW15 and 2 x RW8 all mounted in the back wall will give you a ton of flow and not have to deal with the dry sides sticking out on the side of the tank. Best of all, all 4 may even cost less than 1 MP40 :)

Oh..downside is that you will have cords in the tank like the Tunze pumps. However, nothing a few zip ties and some creativity won't fix. :)

I would go with 2 mp40's on the sides and 2 mp10's on the back wall. Yo don't need mp40 with that width ness.
On ecotech's web page you can see a very nice tank and how they presented the cord so It looks nice.

It's almost impossible to keep sps without good water movement.
You should check a reef in the sky thread and see what he did.

Thanks man, I appreciate the compliments and response. As for the Jebao, I really like them but I don't think it's going to look good on this tank. I need a clean look. I don't want to mess up the clean lines with wires :(

Yes this is a great idea, but I don't think MP10's will work on 3/4" glass. Maybe just 4 MP40? lol

Small Update...

So after an extremely busy 4 days I finally got a chance to go out and pick some tile. I found a decent 18x18 tile. Not my first pick but the price was right. :smoking:

I got my levelling compound, primer, thin set and grout. Wish me luck :)

Oh yeah, here's a pic of the tile.

Still looking for advice on my flow options.

Awesome build so far! About the pump situation.

I ran into a similar problem. My tank was so clean I didn't want to kill it with cords in the tank. I ended up with ecotechs. Well after 2 months of looking at it I couldn't take it. I felt like first thing I saw when I walked in to the house was Mickey mouse ears hanging off my tank. It also was not providing the flow I needed for a sps tank. I looked around and saw the "reef in the sky" build. I could look at his tank, and not care about the wires. They didn't bother me.

I ended up getting a couple tunze pumps. They are mounted high on the backs all. Only about 2 inches of cord in the tank which you can barely see. I have them on the upper corners of the back wall so the wire blends into the black silicone seam. You can't even see it. The flow is so much better now and visually I prefer to see a pump in the tank than to have the dry side sticking out. I felt like the dry side killed the clean look. Also once a couple colonies start growing in you won't even see those things.

Good luck and beautiful tank.

even though I love vortech's, Id go with a combo of vortec and tunze for your tank as I did with mine.

you can put a tunze 6105 [controllable] on the left side of the tank, and put it right at the top left corner, right by the wall, as high as you can place it to avoid the wire and also open up view. point it across the tank, tilted towards the front or back depending on the rock work.

then 1 MP40 on the right side of the tank. And make a little canyon with your rock work, and place the 2nd MP40 on the back glass where the canyon is ... around 2/3 of the tank ...

for the MP on the right side ... if u need more flow, u can make that a MP60 ...

in my tank, 6x2x2 I have 1 MP60 on a side, 2 MP40s on other side[one in front of rock work, another behind the rock work at the bottom] , and a tunze 6105 on top corner as I described above. before my move it was MP60 on one side, MP40 and 6105 on other and another MP40 on the back glass for the canyon.

dont want to ruin your thread with my low quality pics, so here are some links to pics :)

Thanks for the advice on the pumps. You are the second person who has mentioned the Reef in the Sky tank. I guess i really missed his flow set up.
I'll have to check it out.

What were the dimensions of your tank?

Combo action... very interesting. Very detailed explanation as well. Thank you! I've always wanted a tunze wave maker. Now you got me thinking :)
Great tank by the way :)

How bout some sea swirls. Is it too late for a closed loop system ?

Oh God, how I hate sea Swirles lol. My last tank was running a Closed Loop, although I enjoyed it in the beginning, I ended up adding power heads to the mix. The thing with CL are that they take up a lot of space under the tank.
You can see my 150 peninsula build here if you are interested. Be nice as it was only my second tank. I never really updated the FTS when the tank was in it's SPS glory though. Oh well :(

Off to work on the fish room :bounce3:

The good, the bad and the ugly!

So tonight I was excited to get some things done. Wife is out for the night, kids fell asleep early and I have product waiting to be installed lol.

Lets first start off with the good.

I went into the fish room and marked out all of my low spots on the floor to see what I was working with. Here you can see the low spots which were about 1/2" in some places.

file-2222.jpg

Knowing that the floor has been painted, I had to use a primer to ensure I get a good bond with the floor self leveller and the thin set for the tiles. The product was easy to use, just roll it on and let it dry.

file-1676.jpg

The self leveller I'm using is Servo plan plus. I've never used this product before, but the instructions on mixing and application are straight forward.

file-1795.jpg

Then there was the bad

Mixing instructions
4.8L of water, mix at low speed, let sit for 5 mins to slate and remix and apply.

Well after letting it sit for 5 mins, I started to remix it. The mixture felt like it was tightening up quite a bit. Felt like it was starting to set already

I went to apply it and this stuff had the consistency of tile thin set. Not a fluid liquid consistency I was expecting :headwally:

file-634.jpg

And then there was the Ugly.

Not my best hour, but I managed to get a decent surface. Still looks like a 12 year old trowel it on lol. I'm thinking the humidity may have something to do with it. But I'll be speaking to my supplier and see what really happened. I might have to re-do it. Not looking forward to that at all. I'm going to have to re-access the situation tomorrow and decide if I should move on or re-do it.

file-1114.jpg

I'll keep you guys posted as usual :)

I just used that Servoplan for the first time, consider covering the entire floor with another bag if you are not happy with it (which I suspect is the case).

One bag does about an 1/8 of an inch over 100 sq. ft or so I think.

Also, make sure you use the exact amount of water recommended, it should pour on like water, then trowel for consistency and leave it alone to do its thing.

All those Keisel products are outstanding to work with! And priced accordingly of course.

I have recently done a similar project. Looking at your photos I am not seeing anything glaringly bad - looks like you've done a very decent job.
