Desalwii doing bad :Alk swing or AEFW

It's amazing how fast AEFW will overtake a tank. I also had this problem and never did win the battle. I got them r
From another reefer from around here from some frags I picked up. When it was all over I had no sps left in the tank. Dips,water changes, medications, file fish you name it nothing worked. This time around I will dip everything before putting in my tank and possibility even thinking about a quarantine tank. Once you have the AEFW nothing gets them out in a heavily populated tank. Sorry again for your lose and good luck with the rebuild.
 
so is it AEFW? Ive dipped every removable coral and have yet to find a RB or AEFW. my PH is the same 8.1 in the am 8.3. my alk says between 7 and 8. the only thing ive seen swing over the past 3 months would be mag.
 
I had the se problem. A friends tank completely rtned from them. I think what happens is they overwhelm the corals then when one dies the oirms from that one go to another one causing it to be overwhelmed until the whole tank goes up. Now it's just a theory but its logical.

and that would affect montiporas too ?
 
No, well I suppose the dying acros could affect the water quality. How about your lighting? Time to change bulbs maybe?

Could low flow be an issue? I just added another mp10 to my system. Have you actually seen and outbreak of AEFW or RB?

I had RB last year, treated 2 times with interceptor not seen any since that...
I do have AEFW but like I said I've seen all in all about 10 of these even with blasting and dipping...
I have a mp40 on reefcrest and 1 6055 blasting around the back the rock formation...
 
Hmm I'm seeing very similar results but have no pests... I'm wondering if a temp swing occurred... Only thing I've seen swing is my mag. From 1380 to 1260...
 
How do you measure temp? I keep a long mercury lab grade thermometer on hand to test the water once in awhile to make sure that my temp probe is on point.
 
Given I have a frag tank plumbe into my display; I have a rkl temp prob in the sump. A digital thermometer in the display and another in the frag tank. I also have a glass, mercury filled thermometer in the frag tank to double check my probe. So 4 total with a variation of .1 degrees. Give or take a tenth for the mercury one.

Ok now something a little weird...
STN is still continuing even with about 90% waterchange from the beginning...

but here is the weird part...
I cut some frags in the healthy part of some acroporas to try to save them and gave them to a friend of mine, thinking the problem was in my water...

now about 5-7 days later some of his colonies are doing the same thing... STNing...
And it is not the AEFW, he already had them before and no adults were on the frags...

so what's happening here ?
what kind of transmittable disease my frags are spreading ?
anyone had the same thing happened ?
 
The only think i could think of is I also had a frag that RTNed from the LFS. Shortly after I had a few of my pieces that started to do it as well. Not sure if there is an RTN type virus that spreads like a cold, again just taking a shot in the dark here.
 
It is surmised that an acro going through stn or rtn puts out a chemical that signals something causing its neighbors to follow suit. If you have ever watch a tank totally go from rtn it starts with one and then it's neighbor goes then its neighbors go and so on and so on.

I tried to save a friends corals when his whole tank was going through a rtn episode and my tank ended up losing about 1/3 of its colonies. We did figure out it was AEFW for us. His frags had it and gave it to me but the rtn started days after I put some frags from him in my tank. Them sticks are weird, I will no longer accept sick frags because of that episode.

So to answer your question, if you are sure it's not a pest it could be a disease or it could be some chemical put out by the acros. They must have some form of communication, as all you have to do is watch a spawning. They all go off at once. How?

I was aware that RTN-STN could spread in the same tank (the acros are getting the same stress that may have trigger the stn/rtn event), but first time I hear about propagation in another tank...
I also don't understand why the stn keep going after more than 2 months even with stable parameters and 90% water changed...

any other experiences like this ?
 
Dude, this just plain sucks. It's amazing how little we really know about this hobby when it boils down to it.

This thing does behave like a virus or an infection, especially when you see it spread into a new tank from healthy looking frags. The whole thing makes no sense at all, and maybe never will.

What we all know is that with your dedication and hard work, that things will return to their former glory.
