dolphin slaughtering?

I like dolphins. I think killing them for food is like eating dogs. Unfortunately, consumption of both is common in various parts of the world. The problem is that it's difficult to justify killing and eating some kinds of animals while condemning the slaughter of other kinds. Only vegetarians can take the moral high ground in this situation. .

Actually they can not. Have you ever seen a hopper full of grain or even worse soy beans? Full of mangled rabbits, insects and other animals. :crazy1:

The thing about the dolphins is they are not eating them. It is my understanding that they get processed into pet food. Just sad.

It's true. We have a beautiful planet, and humans are going to be the end of it at our current pace.
I take cold comfort from the fact that, at most, we'll probably only wipe ourselves out. The biological world survived the K-T extinction event, and the far worse extinction event at the Permian-Triassic boundary (often called "The Great Dying"). It even survived the oxygen catastrophe, when the air itself became poisonous for the vast majority of living things. Almost everything alive had to switch from anaerobic to aerobic respiration, or simply die. Our extinction event will be small potatoes compared to the worst of these previous extinctions. Unfortunately, we might not be around to see the amazing new forms of life that would fill all the empty ecological niches we left behind.

Hopefully it won't come to this. But if it did, if we wiped out so many species that we couldn't even sustain ourselves as a species any more, it probably still wouldn't be enough to sterilize the planet. As long as a few chemosynthetic bacteria survive around a geothermal vent at the bottom of the ocean (for instance), life can eventually spread back out over the entire planet.

Speak for yourself, limey. I supported your nation's economy when I purchased a supercharged Jag. You want to drive a hideously ugly Prius, go for it. However, do not presume to know what's best for me or anyone else.;)

Anyone with any kind of intelligence can understand that reducing pollution, reducing greenhouse gases, and reducing the amount of co2 the oceans absorb is best for everyone on this planet. Just because some of the big problems are 30,40 years away, doesn't mean they are not happening. Think of the kids.

You call the Prius hideously ugly? Maybe the first year, but the recent models look much better. You want hideous, try the Nissan Cube. Blaaargh!
The LA Times said:
The Cube is to aerodynamics what a collapsing bridge is to Olympic diving, what slipping on an icy sidewalk is to "Swan Lake," what poached dirt on toast is to a gourmet breakfast. It's a travesty, a mockery, a baleful parody of auto aerodynamics. Nissan Motor Co. says the design was inspired by a "bulldog in sunglasses." My question: Which end is wearing the sunglasses?

I think you are preaching to the choir here sir. Eric was clearly just trolling you.

Just watched "The Cove", absolutely Savage!!!

It is really eye opening to see what goes on around the world.

It does bother me and I do something about it. I never buy anything from Japan.
I also don't eat veal. I rarely eat any meat, not because of the stigma attached to it, it is more for health reasons, fish are healthier, not dolphins, just fish.
I am an American and only buy American if it is possable. Not very easy, but "usually" possable.
So it's not easy but thats what I personally do.

I got a boat but I will need a lot of donations to buy enough gas to get it to Japan.
And for some reason, they don't let me carry torpedoes.

Actually LOTR, I was being somewhat silly to point out the extreme view of many eco-nuts.

Please tell me what is "extreame" about not wanting the environment polluted and degraded and wanting a healthy planet left for future generations?

I think anything else is "extream" and "nutty".

Has Anyone seen the Slaughter Houses of the over fed US citizens ......We have no room at all to talk.

Oh and they are so full of chemicals and steroids that some third world country refuse to except it.

Funny how our country *****es that only cute animals (to us) should not be killed 4 consumption and other products...

I live near the Pfizer chemical Farm and you should see what goes on with these cute little Beagles they test on.......We have no room to ***** in MHO.

The wild mustang and horse slaughter is still going on here in America.
If buying american make you feel better than power too you.
Let's turn that around: "The feral horse slaughter of wildlife habitat is still going on here in America."
Ted Williams in Audubon Magazine said:
Cattle do more damage than horses because there are more of them but one horse does far more damage than one cow... While a few feral equids might make a decent living on the Great Plains if they had some sort of natural control (which they don't), they most definitely cannot make a decent living in the bare, arid regions into which they have been pushed, and desert vegetation, which has evolved no defense against solid hooves and meshing incisors, cannot tolerate their presence. Therefore everyone loses"”the horses and burros, the native vegetation, and all the creatures sustained by that native vegetation.
Audubon Magazine
Letting horses overgraze desert and riparian areas (damaging other species' habitat), then starve to death, is far less humane than keeping their numbers down to a sustainable level. We (humans) wiped out their natural predators on this continent around the same time we wiped out the mastodon. If we're going to let herbivores roam loose and breed at will, we need carnivores to keep their numbers in check. People barely tolerate the re-introduction of wolves, and wolves are sized to hunt deer, not horses. Would the public really allow the genetic re-creation and release of saber-toothed tigers, cave bears, and dire wolves to control the horse population? (A moot point, because we don't have the technology yet to resurrect those species.) Without predators, it's up to us to kill or remove enough horses/deer/elk/etc. to keep the rest from starving.

A better question would be, why did this thread have to turn so "political," talking about one country is better than another, one country is to blame, while another is innocent? Citizens of certain countries will eat anything?? Come on!!!??? Certain posts, in this thread, have been, what I would consider, borderline racist!!! This is an INTERNATIONAL forum, and any "racism" or political "banter," needs to be left out of these types of discussions, IMO.

If I recall correctly, I think we've already had a warning from a moderator. We shifted from dolphins to horses by broadening the scope and making comparisons. The dying dolphin discussion lead us to talk about dying cows, chickens, dogs, mice, voles, cats, and horses.
