THE STAND
Isn't that a Stephen King novel?
Anyway as I'm still waiting on Aquarium Obsessed to confirm that the glass has arrived so they can start building my tank,

I have started on the stand for it. The stand will be 60" long x 30" deep by 37" tall (including plywood and foam). As the 6" deep overflow box on the tank is external at the back, once I get the stand upstairs I will position it about 8" away from the wall and then screw a ledger board to the wall and add horizontal 2x4s between the stand and the ledger board. This will serve as supports for the drain piping that will run along the back with hoses connecting to the bulkheads in the bottom of the overflow.
I first building two beams constructed from 2x6s sandwiching 1/2" plywood (making them 3-1/2" thick (the same size as a 2x4). These are just like the 2x6 headers you would find in your house walls over a door or window opening so they are very strong (my typical over-engineering coming into play. :lol:
Here's a photo of the the beam.
I then created what is essentially two stud walls with the header on top, each 60" long and 36" tall. I then joined the two "walls" together with 2x6s at the top connected with joist hangers and with 2x4s at the bottom.
Here's a photo of the completed structure. The vertical 2x4 studs attached to the
ends of the header are, in house framing parlance, what are called
king studs and the ones next to them
under the headers, are called
jack studs.
The whole stand is incredibly strong (I think it would hold up a house

)
I will take it apart by removing the 2x6s and 2x4s so the two "walls" can be moved upstairs where the stand will be re-assembled. I have yet to cut the 3/4" plywood for the top and will add a 2x4 diagonal brace across the back on the inside and a couple of plywood braces at the ends also on the inside.
On Monday I am going to a local lumber supply company to pick up some cherry stock and cherry plywood to make the panels that will clad the stand. I will post pictures of their construction.
Oh by the way, here is a photo of a torch coral I picked up yesterday together with a hammerhead and frogs spawn. Frank of Reef Concepts and Jeff (JRF) and I went on a road trip and hit about six LFS in Raleigh. By far the best was The Fish Room, as they had some very nice frags and their tanks were immaculate.
