Great workshop, Alan! Combining your skills with those tools it's no wonder your your fishroom build is so precise. :)

Back tracking a bit, I see that an earlier in response to your question on livestock didn't stick :) Our coral livestock in Australia is all 'locally' collected from the north-west around to the GBR ... we're not allowed to bring in coral from anywhere else. That makes it difficult for us because our collectors are exporting the best stock to the USA for glamorous prices and we're generally left with not so glamorous pieces at very high prices (like, we get US$40 for xxx so, applying the exchange rate, we'll sell that locally for AUS$67). On the other hand, we can import fish ... yeah, go figure that one ... which helps control the live fish prices.

Our retailers are devoid of ability to properly calculate unit pricing for imported goods so they look at the USA market, adjust for the exchange rate, and add on the estimated cost of freight ... that stops us importing from US retailers and our retailers make a killing on overpriced imports (which is everything).

Tone :)

Great shop, Alan! That Festool circular saw borders on decadent. ;) However, when I grow up, I'm goin' to get me a Festtool Kapex. :p

Nice shop! I wish I had that kind of room :(. Mine is packed into the third bay of my garage. I wish I would have built a four car garage.. Stupid! *smacks head with open palm*

How do you like the festool stuff? I see them all the time on display and my local tool (drug) store. I always wondered if they were worth the price.

That's a bummer. :(

Yes I looked really hard at the Kapex but couldn't justify dropping $1400 on it. :eek2:
Thanks for the complement on the shop. I really enjoy it a lot.

Thanks on the complement. The Festool stuff, although pricey, is worth it. If I had to equip my shop again I would go all Festool, but I can't justify throwing away (or giving away) a perfectly good 12" DeWalt miter box saw to spend $1400 on a Kapex. Maybe when I win the lottery. :p

Just got back from the lumber supply company with a load of............. mahogany.
The cherry was not very good -- lots of sapwood and not too straight either. I really like working with mahogany as it's very stable, machines nicely and takes a stain well. I got 20 board feet and to the non-woodworkers out there a board foot is a piece of wood that is 12" long x 12" wide x 1" thick (aka 4/4 or four quarter). So a piece that is 6' long x 6" wide x 4/4 is 3 board feet. Not cheap at $8.25/board foot I dropped around $200 including a sheet of 1/4" mahogany plywood. Considering an online door company wanted around $1,600 for what I would need, it's a bargain. When I remodeled the kitchen a few years ago the cabinet company wanted $2,000 for a granite top 72" long x 48" wide for our island. I bought the mahogany for around $400. I told my wife -- 'See how much money I saved us'. :D
Tomorrow it's woodworking time. :p I'm going to make what are basically doors. They will be around 15" wide x 33" high constructed with 2-1/4" wide stiles and rails with a 1/4" plywood panel, dressed up with some molding I'll make on the router table.
Pictures to follow. Now, the first rule of cabinet making is, count how many fingers you have and make sure when you count again when the day is done, the number comes out the same. The second rule is measure twice and cut once and if it's still too short cut again.

Yeah, see how much money I saved us Dear, on the cabinets. Ignore that box just dropped off by the FedEx guy, new lights? wow how did they get here..... :)

Love the woodworking, Alan ;)

Takes me back to my junior school years doing woodwork classes in the 60's ... our woodwork teacher (an old Scotsman ... well, he seemed old to us then) used to open each practical class with those same words. If you didn't mind the safety instructions, he'd paddle your backside with a sawn-off cricket bat

She's a sweetie. She offered to buy the tank because of all my effort in the construction of the sunroom (little did she know how much she was commiting to). :D

Cricket bats. Now that takes me back a few years. Ever bowled a googley? And to the uninitiated a googley has nothing to do with a search engine -- its a leg break delivery disguised as an off break, I think.

Alan, there's a very famous quote here in Australia from the world's greatest spin bowler (or so they say), Shane Warne, "Can't bowl, can't bat!"

My cricketing days came to an abrupt halt, one day, fielding at 'silly mid-on'. Caught a full blooded drive smack in the centre of the forehead that left me looking like a unicorn. I know why the fielding position is called 'silly mid-on' and in my case we can add, "can't field" to Shane Warne's quote.

I think that only brave souls play at silly mid on (or those who know no better). Speaking of cricket I remember well the radio interview with the blunt Yorkshire fast bowler Freddie Truman (Fiery Fred as he was known) prior to a test match. The rather inept interviewer said, 'Well Freddie, how are you going to bowl today' to which he replied 'f**ing fast'. :p
He was probably one of the greatest fast bowlers in history. I don't know how old you are but I remember the greats of cricket -- the Bedser twins, "typhoon" Tyson, Don Bradman, Geoff Boycott, et al.

And add the names of the Barlows and the Proctors ... and now you have a good idea on which side of 'mature' that I languish :D

Oh well I knew this would happen. :( I tried to show my wife the size of the tank by putting cardboard down on the floor but I knew as soon as I moved the stand upstairs (which I did yesterday) she would have some negative comments. I had planned on making flat panel doors with a molding where the panel joins the frame but now she is umming and arring.
She wants raised panels which I can do, but with 12 doors/panels to "skin" the stand that's a lot of work. She thinks it's too much of a "brick". I tried to tell he that a 60x30x24 tank is .... well ..... a brick. :D
I will have to see if I can add some plinths to the ends of the stand to soften it up a little. We have to keep the better half happy don't we.

I'll post (as soon as she makes up here mind). My mother always used to say that women are not meant to be understood -- just tolerated. :p

YES, ALAN THAT GOES BOTH WAYS!

Don't I know it. :) This is what I'm going to suggest to her. I will order these posts and have them cut a quarter out so that wrap the two front corners of the stand. Should "soften" it up which I think is what she is trying to do. We have similar ones at the four corners of our kitchen island.

Yes it started to open up this afternoon. Do I have enough lighting BTW?
Sweet tank. ;) I see you saw the light and went with an external overflow. On my overflow he split the weir into two so the Eurobracing had a place to attach to the rear glass in the center. You may want to discuss that with Miracles as with a 36" long overflow the Eurobrace will only be attached for 6" each end. The two holes are I assume for a Durso and emergency drain -- good thinking.
We need to get together and decide what you need for a stand and get a lumber list together. It seems my tank is taking forever so I should have time. With your external overflow it will be a little different from a regular stand. When you come by you can see what I've done with mine.
Saturday is good for me. Give me a call.

YEs, Derek is going to do the same thing with my external overflow and euro bracing.
OK, I will come by tomorrow..say 1pm or so?

Not sure what type of lighting that is you have over the frogspawn, we will look at that tomorrow
