Ever see a clown like this?

lol according to everyone hating on the designer clowns basically just said everyone with blue eyes is a deformity.

Really? Since when is a natural mutation that "stuck" and spread in the "wild" population the same as a human-selected, forced breeding product?

Heh = maybe he should ask the owner to turn the blue lights off and turn on the white one ones to really make sure they're blue.

I prefer wild-type fish, but I can see where the oddness of this clown's coloration is appealing...if the conformation was that of a normal clownfish. Unfortunately, so many of the designer morphs I've seen have those stunted-looking fins and misshapen heads. :(

if you think about it, it was human selected lol

i agree however that its not really "right/accurate/whatever" to call them deformities, since that implies something detrimental and negative. while some of ya'll might not like them, if its is simply a pattern/color mutation it is in no way detrimental to the animal in our closed environments.

Like veletevis, I don't mind the coloration changes but the misshaped of the fish is a real turn off for me. To me they are nothing but deformed clowns. I cannot understand how someone who knows what wild type Ocellaris look like, and look at these misshape fish and still think that they are not deformed.<O:p</O:p
Like I said before, to each his own. If you like misshaped clowns buy them and enjoy them<O:p</O:p

Ok, under just the metal halide light it's black - I don't ever just run that light without the blue, so thanks to those pointing that out. It's definitely a midnight clown, which if you do a search on them you will learn they are neither deformed nor unnatural. They are extremely rare and sell for $90, making them a heck of a lot more special than your dime a dozen $20 striped clowns every tank seems to have.
Appreciate the couple opinions that were worthwhile in this thread though.

Extremely rare? They're bred to keep the mutation no doubt about it. They're basically printing 90 dollar bills. There are many "designer" clowns on the market, and there will be more and more as clownfish are easy to breed. Spend 90$ if you like, but that doesn't make it a rare find from the depths of a secluded reef.

As an example of the mindset, you can find some amazing zoanthids online for over $100 for a single polyp because they are extremely rare or exotic. Or, you can go to a frag swap and get a small colony of the same polyp for $20.

I've seen designer clowns for 40-50$ at swaps because they aren't all that difficult to propagate.
