Gem tang for $1100. To do or not to do...?

I have an opportunity to grab a 2.5-3" established Gem tang for 1100. Considering it hard, but still a lot of money to drop on a fish. I love them, and have the cash but still.
Also my 4-5" black tang may take offense to him, so that worries me a but.

Please chime in on opinions etc.
Thx

I love Gems & that size is awesome!! Very jealous

You gotta decide who you like better - I believe you'd have some aggression as well. Hopefully some other gem owners will post soon. Do you have a pic?

The chances are good that they won't like each other since they look like each other and come from the same family. That is a good chunk of change to chance it. Gems are sweet looking though

I don't have a pic yet. I've seen it in person though.

My black(lebron), he's big, black, worth a lot, and "the king"of the tank, is pretty awesome.
He's not the king cuz of aggression, but just size wise. My wrasses are the aggressors of the tank.
The tank is 11ft long as well

In an 11 foot tank, assuming use of an acclimation box, it might be worth a try. I personally like the blacks better but that is a matter of taste.

No. No matter how good of a deal that is or how much money you have, Gem tang coloration (and rarity for that matter) isn't worth that commitment. There are a million ways to spend that money better on yourself, family or charity. This is intervention. Lol. Don't do it.

Yeah snorvich, I always use acclimation boxes for my wrasses, but have yet for a tang.
In my old 560g(10 ft tank) I had a purple, blue, mustard, orange shoulder, vlamingi, dussmerrsi, and a bunch of large angels. But I usually added a few at a time to disperse aggression.

I am just leery of zebrasoma tangs as once they are established, they are super territorial. But tank length makes most things possible.

Like mentioned above it could be a issue, but you never know until you try. If you ever wanted a Gem tang 1100$ is the best deal you will find on one. DD has them every couple months but they will run you 3 times what you currently found... Roughly

Can you keep it in QT until you have a few more tangs or similar to add to spread the aggression? There was a chap over hear who added a gem with his established black tang and had to rip the tank apart. Split them both up for ages and reintroduced and the same thing happened again. Think the tank was 9ft and I'm sure they didn't really settle.
Would be an expensive mistake if it took some of your stock out on the way. Not trying to put you off, just playing devils advocate.

Boy, that would be a tough one to turn down. Most I ever dropped on a fish was $250 on a chevie, but I'd be sorely tempted. I'd want to be sure if two things, though. One, that my current inhabitants wouldn't beat it up; and two, that I didn't have latent ich in my system. Might be worth setting up a separate tank ....

Get it id its healthy derek its super cheap
Sell the lebron and get MJ

I wonder about putting both tangs in a divided qt, with eggcrate divider, and rearranging the rockwork in the DT so it's new territory for both...

:lol::lol::lol:
Right on! Lawrence speaks the truth!! I'll take MJ all day - on the court & the golf course
Plus you get to watch this one grow up, imo

An 11' tank I would try it. Most BT's seem to be pretty docile, there are always exceptions though. Do you have a QT to hold it in and add another tang or two with it?

Beautiful Bobkill
Yes I have a 7' tank I would put him in first to continue to fatten him up, and monitor him for a bit. I'd put him in the DT in an acclimation box and then add a sm blue tang at same time...if I decide to do it.

That's the reason Lawrence. Cuz he's healthy, established and super cheap. I have my wholesale license and visit a few wholesale stores in LA sporadically. One of the stores has 3 in stock now at $2200. So half that is a steal.
