Grand opening pictures

Although I was unable to attend Johns Grand Opening, I look forward to giving Your Reef an ample amount of business.

I do not find Blue Fu Ma Chu's first post here on Reef Central at all informative. Obvisously he has other interests. Everyone is entitiled to their opinions, but as we all have been watching John spending countless hours, days, weeks and months building his business from his home to a retail store front with a lot of blood, sweat and tears, as a group we should be supporting him for his efforts and for something that is much needed in the growing Roseville area. He has supported MARS for a long time!

Blue Fu, you're not writing a review for the New York Times here, have a bit of respect.

He's entitled to his opinion:D

It's just a different approach to shopping. Personally, I'd rather spend $45 on a healthy tang than $17 for the ones we normally see:(

Sort of like the shopper that would rather spend 2X-3X as much on a japanese car that will give them 300K miles, over say...a Saturn that will need a new transmission within a year.

Yep, it was me. That was my work camera... 1d mkII. I'm used to people staring at it, it's really bad when I have the 70-200 2.8L-IS on there. It's a beast!

Ok, now you are showing off :) haha! Image stabilized L glass...I'd take that over Julia Roberts any day :)

I agree totally Alex, very crummy first post. I think your hearing all the hooting and wooting because we all are very proud of John. Theres no such thing as a perfect LFS, but its advantageous to us all that this LFS is owned and operated by a true hobbyist. Not some business man exploiting the hobby, and not some closet neo nazi self proclaimed hobbyist.

Damn dude its his grand opening I think a lil slack is deserved. It kinda sounds like you just made an inventory of what you think it takes to supply a LFS without actually planning on buying those things at all. Did you ask him if he plans on carrying the items which you said he didnt have but would not mention here as well?If you trully want a good store youll try some constructive suggestions, it will help you and others as well. His store will shift this way and that once he gets a feel for the supply and demand his storefront will bring and not rely on an estimates.

Point is have a heart let alone patience,or, lets here about your store or business so we can put you under a microscope:smokin:

just got back from John's new place. Customer service is excellent and John told me that he will be stocking way more corals soon. He said if you want him to start carring something or have a special request fro a cor just tell him what your looking for. I bought a maroon clown, some gsp, and some zoos (not the best zoos he had but I needed some on a rock with a flat bottom so I could make an island on my substrate). Will post pics in my NC6 thread soon. Everything looked very beautiful and healthy and all was well priced. :)

The yellow tang that seemed a little pricey to certain individuals was a large net caught tang from Hawaii - Health net-caught fish are always going to be a little higher. All his fish were very fat and healthy looking.

Just got back from John's and what a wonderful time it was. I can not tell you the last time I have felt very welcome in a LFS.

A+ John..:)

I assumed from a price like that, that more than likely it was net caught.Very nice to know that he has a net caught connect :) I have to agree, it looks like he cherry picked some sweet healthy fish, or hes sellin us his fish from his personal tank. I was impressed with the damsels and chromis, not a limper or wimper in the bunch. The baby bluegreen chromis were cute as hell.

Hey Blue, Im not angry at all with you. Another downside to talking over the net especially for someone like myself. Just calling you on it is all, friendly argument if you will.

I even more so feel your scope and opinion were narrow after visiting the store myself this afternoon. Dont forget to take into consideration when you look at the other fishstores we have, that they have been here for quite a few years and have had time to cure so to speak. My god capitol has about the best floorplan and layout out of all of them, but, it was set up when things were waay cheaper. I remember being 5 years old and feeding there coy in the entrance, Im 32 now. So for being a brand spanking new from scratch store its off to a great start, but like yours, only in my opinion ;)No hard feelings whatsoever.

I do not find ANY of them informative. In fact I find them a bit evasive and baiting, yet vague and inconclusive. If you ask me, I smell the pungent aroma of a LFS competitor.

Time will tell, but John already has a jump on the local competition simply by quarantining his incoming livestock before selling it. I'd bet that those 4 or 5 FW tanks will soon be converted to salt when the need for more tank space arises.

i went to Johns place today and none of the yellow tangs were more than $30 even the x-large ones

John said that he hand pics all of his fish and he prefers getting all his livestock from a distributer in LA because they have heathier fish/corals than the sacramento distributer

Im gonna take a trip out there tomorrow... store did look a lil small from the pics, but it looked very nice, and CLEAN LFS is very important Versus a Large ugly LFS....

I think when you compare John's to most other LFS in the area, SW holding tank versus SW holding tank, he's probably on par with his tank capacity. What he doesn't have is the additional 1000+sq/f of dry goods that you don't need in the first place.

Also, as his systems mature he will be capable of holding a higher quantity of fish.

Whether he is some disgruntled LFS troll or just someone giving his perspective takes nothing away from John's effort. We've all been to the LFS in our area, and probably all feel the same about the service and product selection they provide (and the business plan they ascribe to). John (and Stacy) differ in several ways (all good) not the least of which that they care about what they do...and they carry sweet SPS frags (OK that last bit was self serving :D)

Kudos to yourreef on a fantastic start!

Trevor
